Historical Description

BILTON is a township, parish and village, 5 miles east-north-east from Wetherby railway station and 9 west from York: the parish comprises the townships of Bilton and Bickerton, and is in the Northern division of the Riding, but is for parliamentary purposes included in the North Riding, ainsty of York, Wetherby union, Tadcaster county court district, West Ainsty petty sessional division, rural deanery of Ainsty and archdeaconry and diocese of York. The church of St. Helen, standing alone on the rood from Wetherby to York, is a stone edifice of the 12th century, erected about 1166, and consists of chancel, nave, north and south aisles, vestry, north porch and a turret at the west end containing 1 bell: the church was restored in 1871, at a cost of £1,600, and refitted with benches of pitch pine and an open roof of the same material, the chancel being at the same time re-floored with encaustic tiles, and having the organ and choir stalls on the south side, the north being still unhappily blocked up by a large and unsightly square pew belonging to the lay rector: the east window is stained and was presented in 1879 by John Miles Dawson esq. of Brook Hall, Wighill: the church contains memorial tablets to several members of the Fawcett family, late of Bilton Grange (1836—46), and to George Iveson and bis wife (1872—9) t in the south aisle remains the effigy of a lady in the costume of the 14th century and supposed to represent an abbess of the Syningthwaite Nunnery, formerly existing in this parish; and at the west end, mounted on a stone bracket, is a curious old Runic cross of stone, believed by the late Sir Gilbert Scott to he the work of a very remote period: the font dates from the re-erection of the church, the parish register from the year 1571, and is complete from that date: among other interesting records it contains entries of the burial of Captain John Carmichael and Captain Daniel Ashton, two officers slain at the battle of Marston Moor, fought in the adjoining parish July 2nd, 1644; and of collections made in the parish for the relief of sufferers by the Great Plague and Fite of London in the years 1665 and 1666 as follows Collected in the Parish Church of Bilton for the visit of the Plague, and returned at York on the 10th Oct the som of 2 6/6, 1665.” “Collected in the parish of Bilton concerning the great fire of London, the some of four pounds sixteen shillings and paid to my Lord Mayor of York the sixth of Nov. 1666.” The living is a discharged vicarage, yearly value £300 with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Ripon and held by the Rev. Bagenal Burdett Newenham T.A.L.C. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, Bilton Hall, the residence of Charles Burgoyne Lamb esq. Stands in about 86 acres. Syningthwaite Nunnery, formerly belonging to the sisterhood of the Cistercian order, is now occupied as a farm house. Andrew Montagu esq. who is lord of the manor, Richard Skilbeck, Richard Wilson Skilbeck, Richard Lomley and Mrs. Henry Nicholson are the chief landowners. The soil is loamy; subsoil, sand and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans and turnips. The area is 1,923 acres; rateable value, £3,207; and the population of the township (1871) 238. The area of the entire parish is 4,810 acres, and the population (1871) 378.
