Historical Description
Bingley is a good market-town, between Bradford and Keighly. It is tolerably well built of brick and stone, and consists chiefly of one long street, in which the market is held on Tuesday. The late census made the population of Bingley, 4782. The situation, upon a dry hill between two delightful vales, is salubrious and pleasant, and the country, to the distance of two or three miles is well wooded, and beautiful. Near Morton, a lordship in this parish, was discovered one of the most valuable deposits of Roman coin ever turned up in Britain. It consisted of a very large quantity of denarii, in excellent preservation; for the most part of Septimus Severus, Julia Domma, Caracalla and Geta, contained in the remains of a brass chest, which had probably been the military chest of a Roman legion, and deposited upon some sudden alarm, in a situation which it had quietly occupied during a period of almost sixteen centuries.
Bingley Church is a plain decent structure, as restored in the earliest part of the reign of Henry VIII. Bingley and Keighley are both situated upon the Aire, in the southern part of Airedale. About Bingley the scenery is rich and woody, commanding two valleys almost equally beautiful. The soil on the levels near Bingley is a limestone gravel, evidently brought down by torrents at some remote period, from the great native masses of calcareous rock at the source of the river. The soil is dry, but shallow; the pasture ground of course suffers from the effects of the drought in summer; but grain, for the same reason, attains an earlier maturity than in any part of the vale above.
BINGLEY is a town, parish and a polling place for the Eastern division of the Riding, having a station on the Midland railway, 14 ½ miles north-west from Leeds, 3 ½ south-east from Keighley, 5 ½ north-west from Bradford and 200 from Loudon, in the Upper division of the Skyrack wapentake, Keighley union and county court district, rural deanery of south Craven, archdeaconry of Craven, diocese of Ripon and province of York. The parish of Bingley consists of the townships of Morton East and West, hamlets of Harden, Micklethwaite and township of Bingley. The town is pleasantly situated to the north of the river Aire, the banks of which are here very picturesquely wooded; it is not incorporated, but regulated by Improvement Commissioners under special Act, the board consisting of twenty-eight members; part of the township is also governed by a Local Board of nine members. The Leeds and Liverpool canal passes through.
All saints’ church, standing on the site of an older edifice, is a stone building in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel with aisles, nave with clerestory and aisles, south porch and a square embattled tower with angle turrets, containing a clock and a musical peal of 8 belli, the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth dating from 1773, the seventh 1827 and the first and eighth 1873: the nave is divided from the aisles by an arcade of four bays, supported by octagonal piers, with moulded caps and plain bases, and has a clerestory lighted by five three-light Perpendicular windows on either side; the aisles are prolonged into the chancel, which is enclosed by an elaborately-curved oak screen, which, as well as the pulpit, is of Perpendicular work; there is a brass eagle lectern and an ancient oaken font, with an inscription recording the visit of a Saxon king to Bingley who lived in the eighth century: there are two memorial windows at east end of north aisle, and a third stained window in the south aisle; there are mural monuments to Samuel Sunderland (1676), Thomas Dobson, of the Vicarage (1747—85), Benjamin Ferrands, of St. Ives, Bingley (1803), William Ferrands, of Harden Grange (1835), General William Twiss C.E. (1827), and a brass to the Rev. William Busfeild, late rector of Keighley: the church will hold 500, and underwent a complete restoration in 1871, when it was re-seated with open benches, the chancel fitted with stalls and a porch erected, at a total cost of £3,000, raised by subscription. The register dates from the year 1577, and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £600 gross with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Ripon and held by the Rev. Arthur Parke Irwine M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, who is also rural dean of south Craven and surrogate.
Holy Trinity is an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1869: the church is a plain stone building of the Lancet period, consisting of chancel, nave and aisles, with sittings for 750 persons: it was erected in 1866 at a cost, including purchase of site, of upwards of £5,000, raised by private subscriptions, and is endowed with £200 yearly by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. The register dates from the year 1866. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £200, in the gift of the Bishop of Ripon and held by the Rev. Henry Lewis Williams M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The area is 1,910 acres; the population: in 1871 was 5,291.
There are chapels for Wesleyan Methodists, Congregationalists, Baptists, Primitive Methodists and Christian Brethren.
The Wesleyan chapel is a fine building with a lofty spire, situated in Mornington road, and erected in 1874 at a cost of £13,000, raised by public subscription; an organ has been placed in the chapel, at a cost of £1,000, left by the late William sharp esq. for this purpose: two substantial residences, situated in Priesthorpe road, were built in 1880 for the ministers.
The charities are as follows:-Sunderland’s charity consists of an estate at Manningham, producing £65 a year, which is distributed in doles to the poor on shrove Tuesday and the last Friday in August. Wooler’s charity of £12 a year is given in annual subscriptions to Ilkley hospital and Bradford infirmary; this is a remnant of a bequest for the poor, which now produces a large annual income, but which has been diverted by the Endowed school Commissioners to the purposes of middle-class education in Bingley. Thomas Busfeild’s charity, amounting to £25 a year, is given in clothing to aged men and women, ten of each receiving suits in alternate years, forty being always on the list. Mercy smith’s charity, amounting to £3 6s. a year, is given along with the above in the form of underclothing to the same aged men and women for that year in which they do not receive suits. Mrs. Sarah Rhodes’ charity consists of 3 cottages for five aged women and the interest of £500, to be paid to them quarterly: this has lately been increased by a gift of £500 from Mr. Stanley and other owners of the estate. Gervase Neville’s charity of £110s. a year, the gift of a former vicar of Bingley, is charged on the Kings mill at Leeds, one half to be given in bread to poor persons at the church on the 18th May, and one half to the vicar for preaching to them on that occasion.
The Cemetery, situated in a retired spot to the north-west of the town, was opened in 1870: it is 10 acres in extent, with two mortuary chapels.
Fairs are held on the first Tuesday in April and second Tuesday in October; the parish feast, called” Bingley tide,” is held during the last week of August: there are remains of an ancient market cross and stocks; the Airedale Agricultural society holds its annual show here the last Wednesday in August.
The staple trade of the town is worsted-spinning.
The Mechanics' Institute, situated in Main street, was erected in 1864 at a cost of £2,700, and contains a good reading room, supplied with all the London and provincial papers, science and art rooms, a library consisting of nearly 2,000 volumes, and a lecture ball capable of seating 450 persons.
The Liberal Club, situated in Main street, contains reading, lecture and billiard rooms, is well supplied with newspapers and has about 250 members.
The Conservative Club is also in Main street.
The Prince of Wales’ Park is situated on the brow of the hill overlooking the town, on the north-east side, and consists of 18 acres: 10 acres were vested in the churchwardens and overseers of Bingley for the benefit of the public by the Enclosure Commissioners, and the remaining eight acres were purchased by public subscription: fine views are obtained from the heights.
St. Ives, the seat of William Ferrand esq. J.P. is situated about a mile west of the town, in a magnificent park and grounds, which afford some good views and have scenery of great natural beauty. Milner Field, the residence of Titus salt esq. a handsome stone structure in the Later Gothic and Elizabethan styles, erected in 1871, stands upon the site of the ancient though unpretending mansion of the Fells, so long known as “Milner Field,” and taken down by Titus salt esq.; the adjoining lands, 170 acres in extent, have been converted into park, pleasure grounds and winter garden, with pineries and other glass houses; and with the natural advantage of beautiful scenery, which it possesses in no ordinary degree, Milner Field may be pronounced one of the most charming places in the neighbourhood. Longwood, the residence of John Taylor esq. is a bijou residence, commanding views of some of the best scenery in the district.
