The church of St. Mary, built in 1825 at the cost of Henry, 6th Baron Middleton, and standing on an eminence within the Park, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a lofty embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 3 bells; the lower stage of the tower forms the principal entrance: in the chancel is an ancient recumbent effigy in stone, removed from the old church, and there are several handsome marble monuments, including one by Rysbrach to Thomas Southeby esq. and another by Westmacott to the founder, Baron Middleton, who died 19th June, 1835: the stained east window was erected to the memory of the late Lord Middleton, d. 19 Dec. 1877, and there are two others to his widow, Julia Louisa (Bosville), d. 1904: a carved oak screen was erected in 1901 as a memorial to the Hon. Mrs. W. Bethell, of Rise Park, Beverley: on the exterior, over the south doorway, are the arms of the founder, in bronze: the church was thoroughly restored in 1878: there are sittings for about 350 persons. The register dates from the year 1811. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £60, with 10 acres of glebe, in the gift of Lord Middleton, and held since 1885 by the Rev. Lawrence Stafford Gresley M.A. of Exeter College, and domestic chaplain to Lord Middleton. Of the ruins of the old church, four arches are remaining, and a portion of the tower mantled with ivy; on one of the walls is a crest with the date “1601,” and the letters “T. S.” There are the remains of a Danish encampment at Aldro, with several tumuli. Here are the kennels of Lord Middleton’s hounds. Malton, Pocklington and York are convenient places for hunting visitors. The area is 4,027 acres of land and 4 of water; rateable value, £3,206; the population of the parish in 1911 was 347.
