Historical Description

BIRKIN is a parish, in the Eastern division of the Riding, Pontefract boner, union, and county court district, lower division of Barkstone Ash wapentake, rural deanery of Pontefract, archdeaconry and diocese of York, 7 miles southwest from Selby, 4 miles north-east from Ferrybridge, situated on the north bank of the river Aire, and comprises the township of Beal. The nearest railway station is at Milford junction. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, and square tower with three bells, dating from 1613: the chancel and nave are pure Norman and the south aisle is in the Decorated style: the font is interesting and dates from 1663: the church contains the monument of a Knight Templar, who bad been three times to the Holy Land, an almost unique example of this early religious enthusiasm, and another to a father, son and grandson, of the Thompson family, and successively rectors of Birkin, one of whom was dragged at a horse’s tail to Cawood Castle in the time of the Commonwealth. but restored on the return of Charles II. The register dates from the year 1684 and is in good condition. The living is a rectory, yearly value £1,008 with residence, in the gift of Simeon’s trustees, and held by the Rev. Henry Frederick Barnes-Lawrence M.A. of Clare College, Cambridge. Mrs. Olivier is lady of the manor. Sir John W. Ramsden bart. is the principal landowner. The soil is clayey; subsoil clay. The chief crops are wheat, barky and pasture. The area of the township is 2,160 acres; rateable value, £2,752; and the population in 1871, 172.
