Historical Description

BISHOP BURTON is a parish, township and pretty village, on the old road from Hull to Beverley and York, 3 miles west from Beverley station, 3 south from Cherry Burton station and 5 north from Little Weighton station on the Hull and Barnsley railway, in the Holderness division of the Riding, Hunsley Beacon division of the wapentake of Harthill, North Hunsley Beacon petty sessional division, Beverley union and county court district, rural deanery of Beverley, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of All Saints, standing on a commanding eminence, is an edifice of stone in various styles, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, south doorway and a western tower containing a clock and 3 bells; the base of the tower dates from about 1150: the body of the church was rebuilt in 1820, at a cost of nearly £1,700: the chancel retains a piscina, and there is a fine monument in the north aisle with a recumbent effigy in alabaster to a lady of the Gee family (the former possessors of the land): on the chancel floor is a brass, with Latin inscription, to Peter Johnson, vicar, ob. 23 May, 1460; another with a very fine effigy of Johannah, wife of Ralph Rokeby knt. dated 1521, and a third, with figures of a knight and lady, of the Ellerker family, with an undated inscription; the aisles are separated from the nave by arcades of four Pointed arches, on octagonal columns: this chancel was rebuilt in 1865 by the late Francis Watt esq. on the former site and a stained east window inserted as a memorial to Richard Watt esq. d. 18 March, 1855, and to Hannah, his wife. There are four memorial windows to the aforementioned Francis Watt esq. and in the nave some modern stained glass, by Mr. C. E. Kempe. No less than four fonts of different dates and also a Saxon figure of the Blessed Virgin have been discovered in the farm buildings and replaced in the church: in 1913 the nave was reseated with carved oak benches: there are 300 sittings. The churchyard was enlarged in 1870 by an additional half-acre of land, given by the late E. R. B. Hall-Watt esq. M.A. who has also re-endowed the living by a donation of £6,666. The register dates from the year 1562. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £270, including 49 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late E. R. Bradley Hall-Watt esq. and held since 1887 by the Rev. William Allwright Pearman M.A. of Pembroke College, Oxford. A new vicarage house was erected in 1889 at a cost of £1,200. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1840, with 116 sittings; a bust of the Rev. John Wesley, carved from the wood of an ancient and remarkable elm tree which stood upon the Village Green and was blown down in 1836, and formerly preserved in the old Wesleyan chapel, is now in the vestry of the parish church. The Baptist chapel was built in 1770. Almshouses for six poor persons were founded by Ralph Hansby, who by deed endowed them with property which now yields £59 10s. yearly; the late William Watt esq. left £2,000, in 1874, in aid of this charity: the total income is now about £162. At Killingwold-graves was once an ancient hospital, founded before 1167 and dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene; it is now a farm, 1 mile east from the village, and belongs to a charity. In the village is a small mere, and in the parish are many barrows, from some of which urns have been taken, containing ashes, burnt bones and charcoal, and in others have been found skeletons lying in different directions at a depth of 4 feet from the surface; in a field in this parish are traces of buildings supposed to have formed part of an ancient palace of the Archbishops of York, in which John Romain or Romanus, Archbishop of York, died in 1296. About 1 ½ miles from Beverley Minster, and in a field by the roadside, is a broken pillar called “Stump Cross,” the remains of one of the crosses which formerly stood on the principal roads leading to Beverley and marked the limits of the sanctuary of St. John of Beverley. An ancient local custom of running for the “Bride's ribbon” after every wedding is still kept up here. High Hall, the property of the trustees of the late Ernest Richard Bradley Hall-Watt esq. M.A., D.L., J.P. (d. 1908), and the residence of Mrs. Hall-Watt, is a fine mansion of red brick, with stone facings, occupying the site of an earlier house, and enlarged and beautified from plans by Mr. Fletcher, architect, when also the grounds were laid out: about 200 acres of trees have also been planted on the estate by the late owners in the stables are the skeletons of “Blacklock” and” Muta,” two famous racehorses formerly belonging to Richard Watt esq. The soil and subsoil are loam and chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, turnips and seeds. The area is 4,261 acres of land and 2 of water; rateable value, £5,560; the population in 1911 was 406.

Church of England School (mixed & infants), endowed in 1714 with £23 yearly, by Mrs. Elizabeth Gee, for over 100 children; average attendance, 68.
