Historical Description

BISHOP THORNTON is a township and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1863 from the parish of Ripon, in the Northern division of the Riding, liberty, petty sessional division and county court district of Ripon, and union of Pateley Bridge, rural deanery of Ripon, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon, 6 miles south-west of Ripon and 3 miles from Ripley station. The township of Warsill was united to this chapelry in 1863. The church of St. John is a plain stone edifice, rebuilt in 1825, with a square tower containing 1 bell, and has a stained east window: the church is, however, inconveniently situated at a distance from the inhabitants, surrounded by fields, and without any roads to it. The register dates from the year 1816. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, with a good vicarage house, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Ripon and held by the Rev. Thomas Higham B.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The Catholics and Wesleyans have chapels here. The charities are 50a. yearly. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are Edward Reynard esq. Sir Henry Day Ingilby bart. Frederick Barnardiston Greenwood esq. and Mrs. Jowitt. The soil is clayey; subsoil clay. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The population (1871) 505: the area is 3,135 acres; rateable value £3,469. The area of the ecclesiastical parish is 4,081 acres; population in 1871 was 602.

Dole Bank, Gillmoor, Hardgate, Raventofts, and Shaw Mill are hamlets adjoining and in this township.
