Historical Description

BISHOP WILTON is a parish, township and village, pleasantly situated on a rivulet at the western foot of The Wolds, and near the Bridlington and York road, which still retains its old name of “Garraby Street,” 3 ½ miles from Fangfoss station on the York and Market Weighton branch of the North Eastern railway, 5 north from Pocklington, 14 east from York and about 30 from Hull, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, Wilton-Beacon division of the wapentake of Harthill, Wilton-Beacon petty sessional division, Pocklington union and county court district, rural deanery of Pocklington, archdeaconry of the East Riding, and diocese of York. The views obtained from The Wolds are full of interest, extending over the vale of York as far west as York Minster South, Howden, Goole and the Humber, and on the north to the Hambleton hills. The church of St. Edith is a large and ancient building of stone, in various styles, with some Norman portions, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, north chapel, south porch and a western tower with lofty octagonal spire, containing a clock and 3 bells; the lower stage of the tower, which rises from within the church, forms a baptistery: all the windows are stained; three memorial windows to the late Sir Tatton Sykes bart. of Sledmere, who died 21 Mar. 1863, and Mary Annie (Foulis) his wife, d. 1861, have been placed in the cancel and at the west end is a memorial window erected by Miss Sykes: the church was restored in 1859 by the late Sir Tatton Sykes bart. at a cost of £5,000, under the direction of J. L. Pearson esq. R.A., F.S.A.: in 1902 the church was reseated in oak, redecorated, a new carved font erected and a mosaic floor laid down, the cost being defrayed by the present Sir Tatton Sykes bart.: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1613. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £271, including 112 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of York, and held since 1905 by the Rev. Edward Peters, of Trinity College, Dublin. In 1907 a new vicarage house was built, at a cost of £1,800. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. Charities.-Sir William Hilyard, in 1632, devised a yearly rent-charge of £8 13s. 4d.: viz. £6 10s. for the vicar for a sermon to be preached once a month, and £2 3s. 4d. for the poor for a distribution of bread every month. The poor’s land was exchanged and increased by allotments at the inclosure in 1772, and consists of 22a. 1r. 17p. let for £20 a year. There is also 10s. a year from Wood’s charity, and there are other small charities. In the parish is a chalk quarry. Sir Tatton Sykes bart. of Sledmere, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is partly clay and partly chalk; the subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, oats and turnips. The area of the township, with Belthorpe, is 4,573 acres; rateable value, £3,910; the population in 1911 was 487 in the township and 670 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Church of England School (mixed), with master’s residence attached, erected in 1868, by Sir Tatton Sykes bart, of Sledmere, for 84 children; average attendance, 80.

Wilkinson D.S.O. of Dringhouses Manor, is the sole landowner. The vicarial tithe payable to the vicar of Wilton amounts to £18, and the rectorial tithe payable to others amounts to £120.

Calais Wold, a farmhouse, is 3 ½ miles east-north-east: it formerly belonged to the five Sisters of York.

Beacon Hill is 1 ½ miles east, and gives its name to the division of the wapentake of Harthill.
