Youlthorpe-with-gowthorpe History

YOULTHORPE-with-GOWTHORPE are hamlets and constablewicks, forming one township in the parish of Bishop Wilton: the former is 2 ¼ miles north-by-east, and the latter 2 west-by-north from Bishop Wilton. Youlthorpe is a small village on a bold eminence, and commands delightful views of The Wold district. The Hon. E. F. Lindley Wood, of Temple Newsam, is the chief landowner. The poor receive 1s. 8d. yearly from Wood’s Bishop Wilton Charity. Gowthorpe comprises three farms. The area is 1,180 acres of good and fertile land; rateable value, £754; the population in 1901 was 85 and in 1911, 76.
