Historical Description

BISHOPTHORPE is a pleasant village, township and parish, 3 miles south from York, on the west bank of the Ouse, in the Northern division of the Riding, but being in Ainsty wapentake is, for parliamentary purposes, included in the North Riding, union and county court district of York, rural deanery of Bishopthorpe and archdeaconry and diocese of York. The church of St. Andrew is in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, transept and bell turret, and was rebuilt in 1768 by Archbishop Drummond, who adorned it with an ancient east window, brought from Cawood Castle: Archbishop Harcourt, in 1842, greatly embellished the church, and filled all the windows with stained glass. The register dates from the year 1692, and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York and held by the Rev. Walter Hudson: the vicarage house was enlarged in the year 1825, at a cost of £2,066. This village is remarkable for its magnificent palace, the residence of the Archbishops of York, purchased and partly built by Archbishop Walter Gray in the early part of the thirteenth century, since which it has been enlarged and improved by the succeeding prelates, especially by Archbishop Drummond, who added a new front and a handsome entrance gateway, chiefly of stone brought from Cawood Castle. The Archbishop is lord of the manor and principal landowner: the soil is chiefly a rich loam: fruit and vegetables are extensively grown here for the supply of York market. The ancient parish of Bishopthorpe contains 739 acres; rateable value, £4,019, and the population in 1871 was 417. The chief part of the township of Middlethorpe was consolidated with this parish for ecclesiastical purposes in 1866, and the total population under the spiritual care of the vicar is now upwards of 500.

The National school was erected at the sole expense of the late Archbishop Harcourt, and enlarged by the present Archbishop; John Pew, master; Mrs. Caroline Anna Kirby, mistress.
