Historical Description

BLACKTOFT is a parish, township and village, on the river Ouse, near its junction with the Trent and Humber, 3 ½ miles south from Staddlethorpe station, on the Hull and Selby branch of the North Eastern railway, 8 east-by-south from Howden and 20 west from Hull, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Howdenshire, Howden union and county court district, rural deanery of Howden, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church, anciently dedicated to St. Clement, but now called Holy Trinity, was rebuilt in 1841, and consists of chancel, nave, small vestry and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 3 bells; a number of improvements were made in 1904, including the addition of an oak screen: there are 282 sittings, 132 being free. The register dates from the year 1702. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £248, including 28 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Durham, and held since 1908 by the Rev. Allan Danson Rigby M.A. of Wadham College, Oxford and B.D. of Durham University. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1839. There are charities of £2 5s. yearly value. Arthur Reginald Empson esq. of Yokefleet Hall, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is alluvial and clay; the subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans, mustard and potatoes. The area of the township is 1,758 acres of land, 3 of water, 51 of tidal water and 14 of foreshore; rateable value, £4,168; the population of the township in 1911 was 473 and of the ecclesiastical parish, 377.
