Historical Description
CASTLE BOLTON is a township and village, standing on a lofty acclivity, about 1 mile west from Redmire station on the Northallerton and Hawes branch of the North Eastern railway and 5 west from Leyburn. Castle Bolton is ecclesiastically united with Redmire and forms a parish called Bolton-cum-Redmire, in the Richmond division of the Riding, petty sessional division and hundred of Hang West, Leyburn union and county court district, rural deanery of Catterick West, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. Oswald is an ancient edifice of stone, in the Early English and Decorated styles, standing close to the castle and consisting of chancel, fine Decorated nave, south porch and a western tower containing one bell: the chalice in use is formed from a cocoa-nut shell, and has a silver rim and stem: there are 130 sittings. The register dates from the year 1684. The living, united to that of Redmire, is a perpetual curacy, net yearly value 160, including 95 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of the rector of Wensley, and held since 1906 by the Rev. William Robinson M.A. of Durham University. The castle, built in the reign of Richard II. by Richard le Scrope, is now chiefly in ruins; in the tower at the south-west angle, Mary Queen of scots was confined from 13th July, 1568, to January 26, 1569; this fortress, which suffered much during the civil wars, was the seat of the Lords Scrope until 1640, when it passed to John Paulett or Powlett, 5th Marquess of Winchester, whose son and successor, Charles 6th marquess, married as his 2nd wife, Mary, daughter of Emanuel 11th Baron Scrope and Earl of Sunderland, and widow of the Hon. Henry Carey: this marquess in 1689 was created Duke of Bolton; Henry, 6th duke and an admiral R.N. died 24 Dec. 1794, without male issue, when the dukedom became extinct. Thomas Orde esq. who married Jean Mary, natural daughter and heiress of Charles 5th Duke of Bolton K.B. assumed the additional name and arms of Powlett and in 1797 was created Baron Bolton, of Bolton Castle; his descendant, the present Lord Bolton, resides at Bolton Hall, Wensley. In 1901 the two rooms on the west side, supposed to have been occupied by persons in the suite of Mary Queen of scots, were restored by the present Lord Bolton, and the lower room contains an interesting museum of local curiosities, and relics collected by Lord Bolton. The chapel of St. Anne, on the south side, has some remains of a piscina, and in the basement are two cannon which formerly belonged to the Loyal Dale Volunteers in 1808. There is an old lead mine and freestone quarries. Lord Bolton is lord of the manor and chief landowner. A great part of the township consists of high moorland, and is principally in pasture. The area of the township is 4,960 acres; rateable value, £1,785; the population in 1911 was 116, and of the ecclesiastical parish 364.
Public Elementary (Endowed) school, founded about 1725 by the Rev. Thomas Baynes, rebuilt by the late Lord Bolton & now an elementary church parish school; the endowment, amounting to 20 a year, is derived from land at Nettlebed Farm, Crack Pot, Swaledale; the school will hold 70 children; average attendance, 52.
