Historical Description

BOLTON-BY -BOLLARD (or Bolton-by-Bowland) is a parish, township and village, in the Northern division of the Riding, west division of Staincliffe and Ewcross wapentake, Clitheroe union and county court district, rural deanery of West Craven, archdeaconry of Craven, diocese of Ripon and province of York. The village is 6 miles north from Clitheroe and 4 ½ from the Chatburn station of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, 4 miles west from Gisburn, 15 west from Skipton and 12 south from settle, and is situated in a picturesque Talley near the river Ribble, which forms the southern boundary of the parish. The church of St. Peter was built apparently about the middle of the 15th century on the foundation of a still older church, and consists of chancel, with an attached chantry (built about A.D. 1500 by the Pudsays, of Bolton Hall, and dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist), nave with clerestory and aisles, porch and a fine Perpendicular tower, containing a clock and 3 bells, two dating from 1500 and the other 1749, on which is the following inscription: “Cum sono disce mori, Cum pulpita vivere disce”: the church was restored in the year 1852, and contains a tomb surmounted by a large limestone slab, inscribed with figures, supposed to represent Sir Ralph Pudsay, his three wives and 25 children; there are other monuments to H. A. Littledale esq. late owner of the Bolton Hall Estate, to the Rev. Dr. Wilson, a former master of the Clitheroe Grammar school (1813), and to the Rev. Richard Dawson, rector of Bolton for 51 years (1826): at the east end of the church is a fixed stone altar inscribed with five crosses and erected in 1603: the east window was placed in 1876, at the sole cost of Mrs. George Hartley, of Whitefriars, settle: there is an ancient font of unique design. The registers date from the year 1558 and are in good condition. The living is a rectory, endowed with tithe rent-charges to the commuted value of £335 5s. with residence and 100 acres of glebe, in the patronage of Mrs. H. A. Littledale and held by the Rev. James Allen Wilson M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. In connexion with the church there is an old endowment in land, producing about £35 annually towards the support of a parish school, and a further endowment under the will of Christopher Dawson esq. (proved at York, October 2, 1786), producing: £7 10s. being the interest of £250 in Three per Cent. Consols for the teaching of girls. The teaching of the boys and girls used to be conducted separately, but, the school accommodation being found poor and insufficient, handsome and commodious school buildings were erected in 1874, consisting of mixed school, infant school and teacher’s house, from designs by Messrs. Paley & Austin, architects, Lancaster, at a cost of upwards of £2,000, raised by subscriptions and grants; these, which occupy a well-chosen Bite, given by C. B. E. Wright esq. at the higher end of the village green, are in union with the National society, and are allowed to enjoy the two above-named endowments so long as they are conducted as elementary schools within the meaning of the Education Act of 1870. There is a congregational chapel at Holden and another for Wesleyans at Bolton. An annual cattle fair has been held in the village from time immemorial on June 28th. followed by a genera] village wake or fair on St. Peter’s day, June 29th; the latter is now observed in an improved form, and is made the occasion of a school treat and village festival. Two flourishing Benefit societies, viz. “The Bolton Amicable society,” and a lodge of the ancient Order of Foresters, known as “King Henry’s Well Court,” make Bolton their head-quarters, and unite in holding their annual festivals there on Ascension day. The Bolton Reading Club possesses a library of between 300 and 400 volumes and rents a cottage in the village, fitted up so as to furnish two reading rooms, which are open every day except Sunday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. A branch of the Yorkshire Penny savings Bank has also been established in connexion with the Reading Club. Bolton Hall, situated near a fine scaur on the Ribble known as “Pudsay’s Leap,” from traditionary story connected with it, Is an interesting old family mansion. Henry VI. took refuge here after his defeat at the battle of Hexham; the room is shown which he is said to have tenanted during his stay, and a spring of water in the grounds, which he is said to have discovered, has been carefully walled in and roofed and is called “King Henry’s Well.” A new wing, containing a large dining-hall and other rooms, has been added to the hall, and extensive alterations made in the stables and gardens connected with it; the park, though not extensive, is beautifully wooded and pleasantly situated, and is watered by the river, the Ribble. C. B. E. Wright esq. J.P. who resides at Bolton Hall, is the owner of the Bolton Hall Estate and lord of the manor, the other chief landowners in the parish being Thomas W. Hare esq. J. Howorth esq. J.P. the Woodlands, Richard Milue-Redhead esq. J.P. Holden Clough, and Lord Ribblesdale. The soil is loamy, resting on bases of limestone and gritstone, and is of unequal fertility. The land is laid duwn almost entirely in grass. The area of the parish is 5,942 acres: rateable value, £7,139; and the population (1871), 708.

St. John of Jerusalem hill, which constituted part of the land given for the endowment of the Pudsay chancel, was formerly reputed extra-parochial but is now rated as part of this parish.

A substantial Court House has been built on one side of the school green, in which the petty sessions are held every alternate fortnight on Monday, and other magisterial business transacted. The petty sessional division compreses the following; townships: Bashall Eaves, Bolton-by-Bolland, Easington, the Higher and Lower divisions of the Forest of Bowland, Gisburn, Gisburn Forest, Grindleton, Horton-in-Gisburn, Middop, Mitton, Newton, Paythorne, Riinington, Sawley, Slaidburn, Waddington and West Bradford.
