Historical Description

BOLTON PERCY is a township, village, station on the North-Eastern railway, and parish, including Colton, Steeton with Streethouses, Hornington and Pallathorp, locally in the Northern division of the Riding, eastern division of the Ainsty wapentake, Tadcaster union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Bishopthorpe, archdeaconry and diocese of York. The parish, being in the ainsty of York, is included for Parliamentary purposes in the North Riding. Bolton Percy township is 4 miles south-east from Tadcaster, 8 south from York, 183 from London, on the north bank of the Wharfe. The church of All saints, dedicated in 1424, and also rebuilt in the fifteenth century, is a handsome stone building in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and a tower and 3 bells, dated respectively, number 1, 1605; number 2, 1628; number 3, 1620: the east window, of five lights, is foliated above, and in the lower compartments are figures of five archbishops of York, Scrope, Bowett, Kempe, Boothe and Neville, each holding in his left hand a pastoral staff or a crozier, the armorial bearings of each prelate being emblazoned at his feet: above these are the figures of St. Peter, St. Anna, the Virgin with the infant Christ, Elizabeth. mother of the Baptist, and St. John; over the chancel window and on the outside is a sculptured crucifix, with either Elizabeth and St. John, or the Virgin and child on the back: there are some ancient monuments of the Fairfax family, one of which, with Corinthian columns supporting a pediment, is to Ferdinand Lord Fairfax of Cameron, general in the Parliamentary army and chief commander at Marston Moor ob. 1647; others commemorate Henry Fairfax, rector of this parish, and his wife Mary, dated 1665 and 1649 respectively, Mrs. Bladen (1692), daughter of Sir William Fairfax of Steeton, and William Fairfax, of Steeton (1694): there are also memorials to the family of Milner, and to Archdeacon Markham, a former rector of this parish: in the churchyard is an antique Sun. dial with four faces, on a plain shaft, surmounted by a ball. The register dates from 1571, is in fair condition, but has been partly mutilated, and is now (1881) being transcribed by one of the curates (the Rev. F. W. Jackson M.A.) The living is a rectory, net income £1,240 yearly, with a parsonage, in the gift of the Archbishop, and held by the Ven. Stephen Creyke M.A. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, formerly Archdeacon of York. There are charities of about £25 yearly value. Sir F. G. Milner bart. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is a strong loam; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips. The area of the township is 2,341 acres; rateable value, £5,603; area of the parish, 7,642 acres; and the population of the township (1871), 288, and of the parish 976.

Horington and Pallathorp are small places here, consisting of two farm houses and a few cottages.
