Steeton History

Steeton is a small township, consisting of two farms and a few cottages, in the parish of Bolton Percy; 3 miles north west from the village. This place was formerly in the possession of the family of De Steeton and became afterwards the seat of Sir Guy Fairfax, one of the judges of the Kings Bench in the reign of Edward IV. and Henry VII. in which family it has ever since remained. Colonel Fairfax is lord of the manor and principal landowner. Steeton Hall, where Fairfax, the Parliamentary general, slept the night before the battle of Marston Moor, is now in the occupation of a farmer; the chapel, which adjoined the house, has been pulled down, the most interesting relics of this place being now deposited at Newton Kyme. The area is 1,141 acres; rateable value, £1,594; and the population in 1871 was 69.
