Ellerton-upon-Swale History
ELLERTON-UPON-SWALE is a township and village, 4 ½ miles from Catterick by road and 1 ½ across the river (which can generally be crossed by cart). The famous Henry Jenkins is stated to have died here at the age of 169 years. Mrs. Carpentor Turnor is lady of the manor and sole landowner. The soil and subsoil is mostly gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, turnips &e. The township contains 1,592 acres of land and 34 of water; rateable value, £1,443; the population in 1911 was 125.
