WHITWELL is a township and village in Northallerton union, 2 ½ miles east from Bolton. Mrs. Carpenter Turnor is lady of the manor; the land belongs to the trustees of the late William Frederick Webb esq;, of Newstead Abbey, Notts (d. 1900), and others. The area comprises 1,114 acres of excellent land; rateable value, £691; the population in 1911 was 91. Here is a small Primitive Methodist chapel.
