Historical Description

Boroughbridge, so called from the bridge here over the river Ure, is a town of very ancient origin, having without doubt risen out of the ruins of Isurium Brigantum, and is situated upon the old Roman road denominated Watling Street. It is a small borough town, sending two members to parliament, in consequence of a particularly qualified burgage tenure, and was first summoned to return representatives by Queen Mary in 1553. Boroughbridge is in the Aldborough parish, to which it has a chapel of ease.

In the year 1318 this town was burnt by the Scots. The principal business of the place at present arises from its thoroughfare situation on the great north road. The river Ure is navigable from hence to Ripon. The market is on Saturday. Here also are annual races.

About half a mile from the town are three large upright stones, about 200 feet asunder, called by the country people the Devil’s Arrows. There were formerly four, and are supposed to have been fixed here by the Romans. The easternmost, or highest of these pyramidal obelisks, is 22 feet and a half high, by four broad, and by four and a half in girth; the second 21 ½ feet by 5 ¼; the third 16 ½ feet by 8 ¼.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BOROUGHBRIDGE is a township and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1866 from the parish of Aldborough, and polling place for the Eastern division of the Riding, 6 miles east-south-east from Ripon, 18 north-west from York and a quarter of a mile from Milby or Boroughbridge station, on a branch of the North Eastern railway, in the union of Great Ouseburn, lower division of the wapentake of Claro, Knaresborongh county court district, rural deanery of Boroughbridge, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon, situated on the south bank of the river Ure and the Ripon and Boroughbridge canal, which separate it from the North Riding. The town is lighted with gas. The church of St. James is a handsome stone building in the Middle Pointed style, built in 1852, and consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and a square embattled tower containing 6 bells, presented by the Baroness Burdett-Coutts, and a clock; there is an organ, and a stained east window. The register dates from the year 1823. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, in the gift of the vicar of Aldborough and held by the Rev. Robert Deaville Owen M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, hon. canon of Ripon, proctor for the archdeaconry of Richmond, surrogate and rural dean. On the site of the old chapel, which was pulled down in 1852, is a memorial well and building, on which are the following inscriptions: “Erected in 1875 by many friends in memory of the kindly virtues of Andrew Sherlock Lawson esq. J.P. born 1 November, 1824, died 22 May, 1872”; on a brass plate is inscribed, “This pump was given for public use by Mrs. Lawson, of Aldborough Manor, A.D. 1875”; the well is 256 feet deep. The Baptists and Wesleyans have chapels here. The charities are of £5 yearly value. The York City and County Bank has a branch here, and there is a Mechanics’ Institute and news rooms. The Odd Fellows and Royal Foresters have lodges here. Fairs are held on the 27th and 28th of April, 23rd and 24th of October, for cattle and sheep, and 21st, 22nd and 23rd of June and 16th and 17th of August yearly, for horses and cattle. Tuesday is the market day. Three immense oblong stones, called the “Devil’s Arrows,” stand in a field adjoining the high road, and in the neighbourhood there are many remains of Roman pavement and a Roman wall four yards wide. A. S. Lawson esq. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is clayey; the subsoil is clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and potatoes. The population in 1871 was 857; the area of the township is 95 acres; of the ecclesiastical parish 69 acres; rateable value £2,253 10s. 1d.

National school (mixed), supported by voluntary contributions, John Best, master; Mrs. Jane Best, mistress. A Sunday school is held in the National school rooms.
