Historical Description

BOSSALL is a parish, township and small village, on the west side of the vale of the Derwent, near the border of the East Riding, 3 miles south from Barton Hill station on the Malton and York section of the North Eastern railway, and 9 north-east from York, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, Bulmer wapentake, petty sessional division of Bulmer East, York union and county court district, rural deanery of Bulmer, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Botolph is a stone building, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts and a central tower with 4 bells, and contains several ancient monuments to the Belt family of the 16th century and two memorial windows to the late Mrs. Trotter, wife of the present vicar: the church was reseated in 1885, and in 1907 the north transept was restored and reopened and the chancel renovated and furnished with oak choir stalls; in the same year a new pulpit and organ were provided and a carved oak reredos erected at the cost of the present vicar; a new oak screen was also placed at the west end of the nave: the stained east window was inserted in 1911 by the present vicar, who also erected a lych-gate in the churchyard: the church affords 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1580. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value 480, including 150 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Durham, and held since 1875 by the Rev. Charles Dale Trotter M.A. of University College, Durham. The vicarage house is of brick and overlooks the vale of the Derwent and the wolds of the East Riding. Bossall Hall, an ancient mansion, occupied by Algernon Barlow esq. J.P. is the property of Sir Robert James Milo Walker bart. of sand Hutton Hall, who is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is clay and loam; the subsoil, various. The chief crops are corn and potatoes. The acreage of the township of Buttercrambe and Bossall is 2,641 acres of land and 50 of water; rateable value, £2,951; the population of the township in 1911 was 214, and of the ecclesiastical parish, 339.

The school committee consists of 6 managers, 4 foundation managers, being the vicar & churchwardens for the time being, & one appointed by the trustees of the late Sir Charles William Strickland bart. owners of the school, one by the parish & one by the county authorities. Chairman, Rev. Charles Dale Trotter M.A.; correspondent, Algernon Barlow esq.

Public Elementary school, rebuilt in 1877 by the late Sir Charles W. Strickland bart. for 60 children; average attendance, 55.
