Historical Description

BRADFIELD, situated on the road leading from Sheffield to Manchester, is a township and ancient chapelry and now a separate ecclesiastical parish formed from that of Ecclesfield, on the Derbyshire borders of the county, consisting of nineteen hamlets, viz.:-Bolsterstone, Brightholmlee, Bradfield, Bradfield Dale, Dungworth. Fairest, Gate, Green, Holdworth. Lower Bradfield, Midhope, Moorwood, Onesacre, Stannington, Storr Smallfield, Ughill, Wigtwizzle and Worrall, 7 miles north-west from Sheffield, 173 from London, 41 ½ from Manchester and 3 south-east from Oughtybridge station on the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway, in the parish of Ecclesfield, and is a polling place for the southern division of the Riding, in the wapentake of Strafforth and Tickhill, union of Wortley, county court district of Sheffield, rural deanery of Ecclesfield and archdeaconry and diocese of York, There are two small streams running south-west to Loxley, where they take the name of the Loxley brook. The church of St. Nicholas, situated on the brow of a hill, and commanding a fine view of the valley of Lower Bradfield and Bradfield Dale, is a stone building in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and a tower containing 6 bells: the church appears to have been rebuilt about 1470, but there are indications of a much older structure; in 1870 it was thoroughly restored, its very unsightly galleries removed and the walls cleared of whitewash, allowing the fine stonework to appear; the new open benches of pitch pine were fitted in the nave, and the chancel furnished throughout with carved oak: ten stained windows have been given by families in the district; the east window by the Wilson family, of Brincliffe Tower; J. W. Rimington-Wilson esq. W, Hinde esq. J. Bedford esq. G. J. Ronksley esq. and J. Hoole esq. are the principal donors of stained glass. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, yearly value £200, with 138a. 2r. 20p. of glebe, in the gilt of the vicar of Ecclesfield and held by the Rev. Reginald Alfred Gatty LL.B, of Christ’s College, Cambridge. There is a Congregational chapel at Loxley, and one for the Wesleyans at Lower Bradfield. The township of Bradfield includes for highway purposes, the divisions of Bolsterstone, Bradfield, Bradfield Nether, Bradfield Dale, Brightholmlee, Dungworth. Fairest, Green, Gate, Holdworth. Loxley, Midhope, Moorwood, Ouesacre, Smallfield, Stannington, Storrs, Ughill, Wigtwizzle and Worrall. At Bradfield is a mound called the Castle Hill, and near the church a Saxon camp called Bailey Hill. Bardike is also an ancient work. There are many barrows and some Druidical stones in the neighbourhood. The Sheffield Water Company, some few years since, constructed a dam on the river Agden, a quarter of a mile from Lower Bradfield and about 8 miles west-north-west from Sheffield, thereby forming a reservoir with an area of more than 86 acres, for the purpose of increasing the supply of water to that town. The old Dale Dyke Reservoir Embankment was in length 1,200 feet; centre height, 100 feet; and breath at base 600 feet; the surface area being about 78 acres in extent; this embankment served its purpose well for some time, but during a period of high winds in the month of March, 1864, the waters, flung with continuous violence against the dam, burst through the summit of the embankment, rapidly enlarged the opening, and finally disintegrating the structure, rushed with unchecked force through the Loxley valley, sweeping away mills, bridges, houses, and portions of villages situated on the slopes and lower portions of the valley; the hamlet of Malin Bridge, excepting those portions situated on the higher grounds, was wholly destroyed, and in one place, where twenty-three cottages were situated, not a stick or stone remained on the morning after the flood to show where they formerly stood, the whole block of buildings, with their sleeping occupants, having been carried away by the flood; the lower streets of Sheffield were inundated, and the basements of houses and manufactories filled with mud and other debris carried down by the overflowing waters, causing great misery and inconvenience among manufacturers, tradesmen and the lower orders of the population; not less than 238 persons lost their lives, some of whom were drowned in the very streets of Sheffield. By au Act of Parliament the company have been since empowered to levy an extra rate on the consumers of their water in Sheffield. Since the occurrence of this calamity, the Agden Reservoir has been completed, and three others have been constructed: the Old Dale Dyke reservoir, now covering an area of 96 acres; the Strines reservoir, extending over 75 acres, and the Damflask reservoir, all situated within a mile of each other. Cliffe Rocher, in Loxley, carried away by the flood, is said to have been one of the principal haunts of Robin Hood and is by some supposed to have been his birthplace. There is a feoffees’ estate of 263 acres and houses, producing £365 yearly, and available for the repair of the church, for educational purposes and relief of poor. The Duke of Norfolk, who is lord of the manor, and R. H. R. Rimington Wilson esq. J.P. are the principal landowners. The moors rise to the height of 1,500 feet. The soil varies, but is very good, excepting the moors, which are about 10,000 acres, where there is fine grouse shooting. The chief crops are grass. The population of the township in 1871 was 11,252 and the area is 38,425 acres; rateable value £43,176; population of the ecclesiastical parish 1,845.

Holdworth. Loxley and Ughill are in the postal delivery, Holdworth being 2 miles south-east, Loxley 2 south-east and Ughill 1 ½ south-west from Bradfield. Razor and pocket knife grinding is carried on at Loxley.
