Historical Description

BRAFFERTON, pleasantly situated on the east bank of the river Swale, with a station on the Boroughbridge branch of the North Eastern railway, is a township and parish adjoining and including Helperby, with which it forms one large, compact and well-built village, 3 ½ miles north-east from Boroughbridge, 16 north-west from York, 6 west from Easingwold and 209 ½ from London, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, wapentake of Buhner, petty sessional division of West Bulmer, union and county court district of Easingwold and in the rural deanery of Easingwold, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Peter, beautifully seated on a commanding eminence, is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, and an embattled tower at the west end containing a clock and six bells: the base of the tower forms a porch: the stained east window was erected at a cost of £200, in commemoration of the Jubilee of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria; another window exhibits the arms of the Nevilles in stained glass, and there are memorial windows to Joseph Bretherton, the Rev. Canon Gray, for upwards of 40 years vicar, and to Mrs. Willink: the pulpit is a memorial to the Rev. R. Springett, a former vicar: the church was rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1832, at a cost of £1,300; in 1878 it was restored, when the gallery was removed and the interior reseated, and in 1890 two handsome oak screens were presented by the late James Coates esq. of Helperby Hall, who also presented the oak screens in the choir in 1897, in commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria, and these were completed in 1909 by his widow and children; he also in 1902 presented a reredos of oak to commemorate the coronation of His late Majesty King Edward VII.: there are 380 sittings: the churchyard was enlarged in 1865. The registers date only from 1798; the earlier ones were burnt with the vicarage house in that year. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £205, including 118 acres of glebe, with good residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1876 by the Rev. Norman Frederick McNeile M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are the lay rectors. The poor’s money, arising out of land at Sowerby, near Thirsk, is distributed annually at Christmas: the Dibbs Bequest of £2 a year is for the education of four poor children of Helperby. The Hon. Robert Boyle, 5th son of Richard, 1st Earl of Cork, and celebrated for his attainments in natural philosophy, by his will, dated 18th July, 1691, directed the residue of his personal estate to be laid out by his executors “for charitable and other pious and good uses, at their discretion; but recommended that the greater part thereof should be applied to the propagation of the Christian religion amongst infidels:” accordingly a sum of £5,400 (being the greater part of the surplus of his personalty) was expended in the purchase of an estate here; he died 30 Dec. 1691: the fund now arising from this charity donation consists of the net receipts of the estate, £1,998 9s.

Most of the cottagers of Brafferton hold allotments. Brafferton spring is a noted fox cover. Brafferton Hall, situated near the church, is the property of Major Sir Edward Feetham Coates bart. M.P., D.L., J.P. and the residence of Mrs. Kelsall. The Christian Faith society are lords of the manor and the principal landowners. The manor once belonged to Ralph, father of Thomas Rymer, historiographer royal and author of the”Foedera,” who died in the strand, London, 14 Dec. 1713. The soil in the greater part of the parish is remarkably fertile, chiefly sand, clay and good barley soil. The area is 1,833 acres of land and 16 of water; rateable value, £4,166; and the population of Brafferton township in 1911 was 231, and of the ecclesiastical parish, which includes Helperby and Thornton Bridge and a portion of Fawdington, 881.

Public Elementary school, erected in 1859, for 200 children; average attendance, 155.
