Historical Description

BRAITHWELL is a township and parish, 3 ½ miles south from the Conisbrough station on the South Yorkshire railway, 7 east-north-east from Rotherham, 6 ½ south-south west from Doncaster, 3 ½ west from Tickhill and 168 from London, in the southern division of the Riding, northern division of Strafforth and Tickhill wapentake, Doncaster union and county court district, rural deanery of Rotherham, archdeaconry and diocese of York. The church of St. James is a stone building, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave and a battlemented tower with pinnacles at the west end, containing 3 bells: this church, originally cruciform, with a tower at the intersection of the limbs, has undergone repeated alterations, and all that can be said with certainty to belong to the earlier structure is the circular arch oyer the principal entrance; whatever brasses it may have once contained have been destroyed or removed: within the communion rails is a mutilated inscription, with the arms of the Sheffields (a fess between 6 sheaves of corn), “Hie jacet Thomas Schofield qui obiit MCCCCVI,” engraved on a scroll encircling the head of an elegant cross floree: there are other inscriptions to Thomas Bosvile (1631), Nathaniel Eyre (1663), John Gleadall (1688) and John Turner (1766) the pulpit and reading-desk are of carved oak; on the former, carved in old English characters, are three texts, with the date 1574: in the chancel, remains what is called the “Founder’s tomb,” a monument of unusually large dimensions, and near it a piscina; there is no stained glass, and the font is modern. In the centre of the village is an ancient cross, dated MCXCI, with an inscription which Dr. Pegge read:—

“Jesu le fiz Marie Pense toy Le frere no roy Je vous prie.”

The register dates from the year 1559, and is in fairly good condition. The living is a rectory, yearly value £330 with good residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor and held by the Rev. Christopher Hodgson, of St. Bees. There are chapels for Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists. The poor have several small benefactions amounting to £34 yearly. Stockings are made here. Lord Conyers is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the Earl of scarborough, J. Waterhouse and J. Fisher esqrs. The soil is clay and loam; the subsoil is limestone. The chief Crops are wheat, barley and beans. The population of the township in 1871 was 372, and the area 1,918 acres; the rateable value is £3,120, exclusive of Bramley. The population of the entire parish is 732, and the area 2,963 acres. Micelebring is a hamlet, 1 mile west.

Village, founded by John Bosvile in 1693, as appears from the following inscription on the school house:-“in Dei gloriam Patriae commodum hancce Scholam fundavit Johan: Bosvile 1693.” Miss Arabella shepherd, mistress.
