Historical Description

BRAMLEY is a manufacturing village, township, chapelry and ecclesiastical parish formed in 1863 from the parish of Leeds, the head of a union, and has a station on the Great Northern railway, 3 ½ miles west-by-north from Leeds, in the Eastern division of the Riding, municipal and parliamentary borough of Leeds, Leeds county court district, wapentake of Morley, honour of Pontefract, diocese of Ripon, archdeaconry of Craven and rural deanery of Leeds: it stands on a boldly swelling eminence on the south side of Airedale, and includes part of Stanningley, Rodlet, Kirkstall Bridge, Bramley Fall, and the hamlets of Newlay and Hough End. The Leeds and Liverpool canal passes through. The church of St. Peter, erected in 1863, near to the site of the ancient edifice dedicated to St. Margaret, is a handsome and spacious stone building in the Geometric style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, transept, chapel, vestry and tower with spire containing a peal of bells and a clock: there are several stained windows, one to the Rev. D. W. Steppings M.A. was placed in the church in 1875, and another has lately been erected to Charles Hainsworth. late churchwarden: the church will seat about 1,000 persons. The register dates from 1717. The living is a perpetual curacy, yearly value £440 with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Leeds, and held by the Rev. Samuel William Cope M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. There is a small school-church at Hough End seated to hold about 200 people. Here are commodious chapels belonging to the Baptists, Wesleyans, and Primitive Methodists and United Methodist Free Church. The charities are about £150 yearly. Bramley Fall is noted for its quarries of excellent stone. The principal manufactures are those of cloth, iron and leather. The trustees of the late Earl of Cardigan are lords of the manor and principal landowners. The soil is clay and loam; subsoil clay. The chief crops are wheat and oats. The township and chapelry contain 2.505 acres; population in 1871, 9,882; rateable value, £40,571.
