Historical Description
The village of Bransburton, on the left of our road, about four miles west from Hornsea, was left by Lady Dacre to the Lord Mayor and Aldermen of the City of London, in trust for Emanuel Hospital in York-Street, Westminster, founded for old maids and batchelors in 1601.
BRANDESBURTON, or Brandsburton, is a parish, township and large village, on the road from Beverley to Bridlington, 6 miles west from Hornsea terminal station on a branch of the North Eastern railway, 8 north-east from Beverley and 10 east-south-east from Driffield, in the Holderness division of the Riding, north division of Holderness wapentake. North Holderness petty sessional division, Skirlaugh union, Beverley county court district, rural deanery of Hornsea, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Mary is a large structure of the Early English and Decorated styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a western tower containing 2 bells: there is a memorial window to James Maxwell Davis, a choir boy, who died in 1895, and another stained window presented by Miss Jackson, of Beverley; the stained east window was given by Robert Dixon esq. as a memorial to the Dixon family, long residents in the parish: on the chancel floor are two life-size brasses, representing a knight and his lady, dated 1397; the former is slightly mutilated, and the inscription obliterated, but a shield bearing the arms of St. Quintin still remains: in the chancel is also a brass to William Darell, a former rector, ob. 1364; the church was partially restored in 1889, at a cost of £2,000, and further in 1897 at a cost of £1,000, and affords 308 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value about £816, including 144 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of St. John's College, Cambridge, and held since 1887 by the Rev. William James Furneaux Vashon Baker M.A. and formerly a fellow of that college, and canon of York. There is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1809, with 80 sittings, and a Primitive Methodist chapel; near Moortown is another Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1870, with 35 sittings. There are charities of £7 13s. 2d. yearly value. The fair, formerly held on the 15th of May, for horses and cattle, has fallen into disuse. Antediluvian remains have been found here, including teeth of the mammoth, an elephant's tusk and marine shells; near the crown of the hill human skeletons have been discovered. Brandesburton Hall, the seat of Lt.-Col. James Jonathan Harrison J.P. is a modern mansion of red brick with stone quoins, into which a portion of the old building, erected in 1772, has been incorporated. The manor and 3,000 acres of land were left by Lady Dacre (who died in 1595) for the building and endowment of Emmanuel Hospital, Westminster, of which the Lord Mayor and Corporation of London are trustees. The soils are strong clay and gravel and there is a very extensive diluvial ridge of gravel and sand running through this and adjoining parishes. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans, peas, mangold wurtzels and turnips. The area of the township is 4,659 acres of land, 4 of tidal water and 2 of foreshore; rateable value, £4,855; the population in 1911 was 598, and parish, 608.
Public Elementary School, erected in 1843, was enlarged in 1878 by the Lord Mayor & Corporation of London, as trustees of Emmanuel Hospital, Westminster, for 200 children; average attendance, about 100.
