Historical Description
BRAYTON is a township, small village and large parish, 1 mile south-west from Selby, in the Eastern division of the Riding, lower division of the wapentake of Barkstone Ash, union and county court district of Selby, rural deanery of Selby, archdeaconry of York and diocese of York. The Leeds and Selby railway passes through the townships of Brayton, Thorpe Willoughby and Hambleton on the north side of the parish, and the Selby canal passes through the township of Brayton, as also does the North Eastern railway, York and Doncaster line. The church of St. Wilfrid is a stone building, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and a tower, surmounted by a Perpendicular lantern and an octagon spire and containing 3 bells: the chancel arch and south door are Norman, and much enriched: the nave is Perpendicular, the chancel decorated with some good windows, and beautiful sedilia of Early English character, and a monument to Lord Darcie and his wife, Dorothy (1358): the church was completely restored in 1878: the font was presented by the Rev. Joseph Dunnington Jefferson. The register dates from the year 1610. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £350, including 140 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York and held by the Rev Robert Jarratt Crosthwaite M.A. formerly fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, Here is a Sunday school and a chapel for Wesleyans. The poor’s estate of 36 acres produces £72 yearly. Lord Lanesborough is lord of the manor, and he and Humphrey Brooke Firman esq. are the principal landowners. Soil and subsoil, red and black sand. The chief crops are flax, potatoes and wheat. The area of the township is 1,949 acres; rateable value, £6,20215s. 0d.; and the population (1871), 394. The area of the parish is 11,666 acres; population, 1,912.
The National school (mixed), erected in 1872 & built & supported by voluntary subscriptions, has a house for the master: Frederick Henry Mould, master; Miss Elizabeth Mould, mistress.
