Gateforth History
GATEFORTH is a township in the parish of Brayton, 5 miles south-west from Selby and 2 from the Hambleton station, in the Eastern division of the Riding, wapentake of Barkstone Ash, union and county court district of Selby, rural deanery of Selby, archdeaconry and diocese of York. The church, built and endowed by Humphrey Osbaldeston esq. and consecrated 1825, is a building of white brick, consisting of chancel, nave and two short aisles, tower with spire and a clock. The living is a perpetual curacy, worth £200 yearly, with parsonage house at Hambleton, in the gift of H. B. Firman esq. and held by the Rev. William Henry Cleveland B.A. of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge.
Gateforth Hall, the seat of Henry Brooke Firman esq. lord of the manor and principal landowner, is a handsome residence, situated in pleasant grounds. The soil and subsoil are red sandstone. The chief crops are potatoes and wheat. The area is 2,062 acres; rateable value, £2,332; the population in 1871 was 177.
