Historical Description
BRIGHOUSE is a town and an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1843 from the parish of Halifax, in the township of Hipperholme-cum-Brigbouse, with a station on the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, 4 ½ miles south-east from Halifax, 7 ½ south from Bradford, and 4 north-east from Huddersfield: it is a polling place for the Northern division of the Riding, in the wapentake of Morley, union and county court district of Halifax, rural deanery of Halifax, archdeaconry of Craven, diocese of Ripon and manor of Wakefield, situated on the river Calder, near a cutting belonging to the Calder and Hebble navigation, in the vale of Calder, and on the high road from Huddersfield to Bradford. The surrounding hills of Clifton, Rastrick and Southowram, being thickly-wooded, add much to the beauty of the valley of Brighouse. A local Act of Parliament, passed in 1846, for lighting and draining the town, has been carried into operation. The Gas Works are large and capacious. The town is supplied with water by the corporation of Halifax, and is governed by a Local Board of Health of 12 members. The church of St. Martin is a stone building, erected in 1830 in the Gothic style, and consists of chancel, nave and square embattled tower with 8 bells (purchased by subscription in 1873), and a clock: there are sittings for 1,130 persons, half of which are free: in the chancel is a stained window to John Brooke esq. of the Rhydings, erected by his family; and one in the south aisle, erected in 1871 by Mrs. Kaye Aspinall, in memory of her husband. The register dates from the year 1831. The living is a vicarage, yearly value about £300, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Halifax and held by the Rev. William Booker M.A. of St. Peter’s College, Cambridge. St. James’ church, a stone building in the Gothic style, was erected as a chapel of ease to the parish church, at a cost of about £5,000, raised by public subscription, and consists of chancel, nave and aisles, with bell-turret containing 2 small bells: here is a stained east window, erected by Mrs. Craven, of Manchester, in memory of a child. There are chapels for the Methodist New Connexion, Methodist Reformers, Primitive Methodists and Congregationalists. A Catholic chapel was opened in 1879 in Bradford road; the services of the Catholic Apostolic Church are held in a room in Bank street: the cemetery, formed by the Local Board in 1874, is situated in the Lightcliffe road, and consists of about 9 acres, of which one half has been consecrated, and there are two mortuary chapels. The town has increased in importance, owing to its manufactures of woollen, worsted, silk, cotton, carpet, and soap, and to its extensive flour mills, mattings, wire mills, card and machine making, and also on account of its contiguity to the Bradford, Halifax, Huddersfield and Leeds markets. Coal and stone, of the best quality for flagging and building purposes, are found in abundance in the neighbourhood, great quantities of the latter being sent by canal to Goole for London and other ports. The Town Hall was built by the Brighouse Town Hall Co. Limited, with a capital of £7,000, in shares of £1 each, and is used for public meetings and the transaction of business relating to the town; it comprises mechanics’ institution, savings bank, news-room, mercantile offices and an assembly room capable of holding 1,000 people: Messrs. Mallinson and Barber, of Halifax, were the architects. A pleasure fair is held on August 9th and one for cattle on October 15th in each year. Mrs. Aspinall is lady of the manor. The principal landowners are Evan C. Sutherland Walker esq. Joseph Raynor esq. Liverpool, William Sugden esq. Slead House, and George Manley esq. Brighouse. The soil is sandy and light. The land is chiefly pasture, with a little wheat. The population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1871 was 6,370. Rateable value, £27,597.
Schools
The National, for boys and girls, was enlarged in 1861 and a house built for the master, costing altogether £1,300, raised by general subscription, aided by a grant of £300 from the Committee of Council on Education; Benjamin Holt Thorpe, master; Miss Mary Ann Booth. mistress; Miss Mary Eliza Quarmley, infants’ mistress.
St. James' (girls’ & infants’), has been built at a cost of £600, raised by subscription and grant of £150 from the Committee of Council on Education; Miss Caroline Clayton, mistress.
St. Joseph’s (Catholic), mixed; Miss Kate Fallon, mistress.
