Historical Description

BRODSWORTH is a township, parish and village, 2 miles from Adwick-le-street railway station, 5 miles north-west-by-west from Doncaster, 11 east from Barnsley, 15 south-east from Wakefield, 11 north-east from Rotherham and 172 from London, in the southern division of the Riding, north division of Strafforth and Tickhill wapentake, Doncaster union and county court district, rural deanery of Doncaster, and archdeaconry and diocese of York, pleasantly situated in a fertile valley on the Great North road or Roman ridge. The church of St. Michael is a building in the Early Norman style in which the tower especially is rich: it consists of chancel with north and south chapels, nave, aisles, and 3 bells dated 1630, and contains monuments to the Thellusson and Drummond families, and a tomb to Richard de Pickburne and Johanna his wife (1420): in the porch is a very handsome floriated cross richly decorated, of the reign of Edward III. and a double floriated cross, with a sword and snake of same date: a unique Saxon cross discovered in the church has been placed in the churchyard by the present vicar: the pulpit of richly carved oak dates from 1696, and bears the monogram of a member of the Fitzwilliam family, who were formerly owners here. The register, dating from the year 1538, has been admirably kept, and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £530, with residence and 327 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held by the Rev. Gilbert Henderson Philips M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford, Canon of York, chaplain to the Archbishop of York and rural dean of Snaith. A Sunday school is held at the schoolroom. The charities for distribution amount to £12 yearly. There is a Wesleyan chapel. Here is an extensive limestone quarry: a stream of good water issues from the limestone. Brodsworth Hall, the seat of Charles Sabine Augustus Thellusson esq. D.L. lord of the manor and chief landowner, is situated on an eminence, and stands in an extensive park, and is surrounded by ornamental grounds, most tastefully laid out; it was rebuilt by the present owner: formerly this estate belonged to the late Peter Thellusson, whose singular will was the cause of the passing of the Act known as the Thellusson Act (39 & 40 Geo. 3, c. 98). The soil is limestone; the subsoil limestone and marl, The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips and seed. Brodsworth parish, with Pickbourne and Scawsby, contains 3,120 acres; rateable value, £4,482; and the population in 1871 was 412.

The school (mixed) has an endowment of £10 for ten boys, charged upon the Thellusson estate, to which the lord of the manor adds an annual subscription; Sarah Ana Barnes, mistress.
