The church of All Saints is a building of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel and nave of three bays under a continuous roof, aisles, south porch and a western tower with broach spire, containing 3 bells: the communion table is of oak: the south aisle retains a piscina and two brackets, and there is a circular font, supported on a shaft and baser in the north aisle are some fragments of heraldic glass, and there are memorial windows to members of the Cayley (Wydale) and Chambers families (1884 and 1889), together with various monuments in marble and stone to members of the Westrop, Cayley and Harland families (1547—1765), including a fine marble group by Matthew Noble, the eminent sculptor, and a native of this parish: in this church, in 1802, the poet Wordsworth was married to Miss Mary Hutchinson, of Gallows Hill, in the parish of Brompton: the church was restored in 1878, at a cost of £1,200, and affords 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1584. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £196, including 8 acres of glebe, in the gift of Sir George Everard Arthur Cayley bart. and held since 1908 by the Rev. There are free dwellings for two widows, erected by Mrs. Margaret Pierson, of Falsgrave, and Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. Some of the Northumbrian kings are said to have resided here, at a spot now called “Castle Hill,” and this may possibly have been the birthplace of John de Brompton, the chronicler, a monk of Whitby abbey, and subsequently abbot of Jervaulx in 1436. High Hall, the seat of John William Coulthurst esq. is a plain stone mansion at the west end of the village. The principal landowners are Sir G. E. Arthur Cayley bart. and the Ducy of Lancaster, who are lords of the manor. The soil is oolite limestone, gravel and loam; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The population of the township in 1911 was 590; acreage, 5,306 of land and 13 of water; reteable value, £5,088; the population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1911 was 1,182.
