The register dates from the year 1562, and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300 with good house, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of York and held by the Rev. George Haslam B.A. of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. A Sunday school is held in the National school room. There are Congregational, Wesleyan, and Primitive Methodist chapels. A Mechanics’ Institute was opened in 1878. The charities amount to £20 yearly. Sir J. W. Ramsden bart. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is principally on the limestone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, peas and potatoes. The area of the parish is 2,388 acres; rateable value, £4,041; and the population in 1871 was 1,190.
