Historical Description
At Broughton, a mile and a half north-west from Malton, was an hospital of St. Mary Magdalen, founded by Eustace Fitz-John, who died in the reign of Henry II.
BROUGHTON is a township and 3 miles west from Skipton, in the Northern division of the Riding, Skipton union, county court district and petty sessional division, eastern division of the Staincliffe and Ewcross wapentake, rural deanery of West Craven, Craven archdeaconry and Ripon diocese. The church of All Saints, standing in a solitary situation, almost a mile from the village, is a building in the Early English and Late Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave and north aisle, with angular columns and niches, although it originally resembled almost all others in the district in being destitute both of tower and aisles: at the east end, is the chapel of the Tempest family, with mural monuments to Stephen Tempest (1771), the inscription including also an entire genealogy of this family, from the year 1406; to Stephen Walter Tempest (1784), Frances Olive Tempest, his wife (1795), Stephen Tempest (1654—1742), and his wife Elizabeth (Fermor) (1738), and to Richard Tempest (1792), The register dates from the year 1674. The living is a rectory, yearly value £250, in the gift of Christ Church, Oxford and held by the Rev. Thomas Evans M.A. of Christ Church. Here is a Catholic chapel. Broughton Hall, the seat of Mrs. Semon, anciently called Gilliott’s Place, and originally standing near the brook, was removed to its present site in 1597, and rebuilt with timber given, it is said, by George, Earl of Cumberland, out of his park at Carlton; it is now a handsome stone mansion in the Ionic style, pleasantly situated in a park and grounds of 80 acres, through which a feeder of the river Aire passes, adding considerably to the beauty of the estate. The trustees of the late Sir Charles Robert Tempest are lords of the manor and principal landowners. The soil is loamy; subsoil, limestone. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area of the township is 2,041 acres; of the parish 4,148 acres; rateable value, £3,517 5s. 8d. and the population in 1871 was-township 181; parish 268.
School, supported by the landowners, Samuel skippings, master.
BROUGHTON is a parish comprising the hamlets of Great and Little Broughton, in the Cleveland division of the Riding, west division of Langbaurgh liberty, petty sessional division of Langbaurgh West, Stokesley union and county court district.
