Historical Description

BULMER is a township, parish and village, pleasantly seated on an eminence, 3 miles north-west from Castle Howard station on the York and Scarborough branch of the North Eastern railway, 7 south-west from Malton and 14 north-east from York, and gives name to the wapentake in which it is included, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, Malton union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Bulmer, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Martin is an ancient edifice of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 3 bells: in the north wall of the nave, under the pulpit, is the effigy of a knight in armour: there are 120 sittings. The register dates from the year 1592. The living is a rectory, with Welburn annexed, joint net yearly value £300, including 6 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Rosalind, Countess of Carlisle, and held since 1507 by the Rev. Henry Laurence. Rosalind, Countess of Carlisle, is lady of the manor and chief landowner. On Bulmer Hill, distant one mile, is a column, designed by F. Cockerell and erected in 1869, to George, 7th Earl of Carlisle, who died 5 Dec. 1864. The soil is various; subsoil, gravel. The crops, besides pasture, are wheat, oats and barley. The area of the township is 1,666 acres; rateable value, £1,905; the population in 1911 was 191, and of the ecclesiastical parish, 701.

The “Castle Howard Reformatory (Farm) School” for the North and East Ridings of Yorkshire, the town of Kingston-upon-Hull and the city and vicinity of York, was erected in 1855 and is managed by a committee and supported partly by voluntary subscriptions: at is intended for the reformation of juvenile offenders convicted of crime, who receive instruction in farming, gardening and various trades: a sanitary wing, consisting of hospital wards, dormitories and the usual offices, was added in 1887, and a gymnasium and lecture hall, capable of seating 500 persons, were built in 1906: attached is a chapel, erected in 1868 and considerably enlarged in 1887: the stained east window is a memorial to the 7th Earl of Carlisle, and was erected by his sister, the Hon. Lady Taunton, in 1878; in the south porch is a tablet to his memory, erected in 1868 by the friends of the institution; and on the north wall is a memorial brass to the Rev. Ishmael Fish (1855—1867) and his brother the Rev. R. G. Fish (1867—1897); another tablet on the south wall was erected in 1903 to the memory of two old boys who fell when on active service in south Africa: the chapel affords 100 sittings: a new certificate was granted January 2, 1911; the Reformatory is available for 100 inmates; Lieut-Col. Colin D. Johnstone, governor; the Rev. Henry Laurence, rector of Bulmer, chaplain; J. McPhail Dousrall M.D. medical officer.
