Historical Description

BURGHWALLIS is a parish, township and small pleasant village, situated near the old London and York road, 2 ½ miles south-west from Askern station on the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, 2 ½ north from Adwick-le-street and Carcroft station on the West Riding and Grimsby railway, 7 north-west from Doncaster and 9 south-east from Pontefract, in the Eastern division of the Riding, Doncaster union and county court district, upper division of Osgoldcross wapentake, Doncaster rural deanery, and in the archdeaconry and diocese of York. The township of Burghwallis extends into the parishes of Barnby-upon-Don and Owston-with-Skellow. The church of St. Helen is an ancient stone fabric in mixed styles of architecture, consisting of chancel and nave, with tower and 3 bells, recast in 1872 at the sole expense of Scholes Birch esq. and contains an old register chest and an ancient monument to one Thomas Gaseoigne, dated 1554. The register dates from the year 1597. The living is a rectory endowed with a sixth part of the tithes of Sutton, yearly value £275 with residence, in the gift of George Anne esq. and held by the Rev. Francis William Peel M.A. of Worcester College Oxford. The charities consist of 2 ¾ acres of land in Sutton Field, producing £9 yearly. Burghwallis was a Roman station. Burghwallis Hall, the seat of George Anne esq. J.P. who is lord of the manor and chief landowner, is a noble mansion, with Catholic chapel attached. The soil is clayey; the subsoil is limestone, clay and marl. The chief crops are wheat, beans and barley. The area is 1,921 acres; rateable value, £3,624. The population in 1871 was 230.
