Historical Description

BURNESTON is a township and parish in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Hallikeld, Ripon county court district, union of Bedale, rural deanery of East Catterick, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. Burneston, near the Great North road, or Leeming Lane, and near a small rivulet, is 3 miles north-north-west from Sinderby station on the Northallerton and Ripon section of the North Eastern railway, 3 ½ south-east from Bedale, 10 north from Ripon and 9 north-west-by-west from Thirsk, in the county court district of Ripon. The church of St. Lambert is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a western tower with spire containing 6 bells: the windows are stained, and there are 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1566. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £310, with residence, in the gift of W. D. Russell esq. and held since 1874 by the Rev. John Thorneycroft Hartley M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford, hon. canon of Ripon, and rural dean of East Catterick. There is a Wesleyan chapel, and an almshouse for five poor persons, men and women. William Darby Russell esq. of Newton House, Bedale, is the chief landowner. The surface is level; the soil is chiefly gravel; subsoil, red sandstone. The chief crops are wheat and roots, and a quantity of land is in pasture. The area of the township is 1,227 acres; rateable value, £1,822; the population in 1911 was township, 217; ecclesiastical parish, 763.
