Historical Description

BURNSALL is a parish which comprises the townships of Burnsall, Appletreewick, Hartlington and Thorpe-sub-Montem, and village among the fells, 11 ½ miles north-east from Skipton, in the Northern division of the Riding, Skipton petty sessional division, union and county court district, east division of the wapentake of Staincliffe and Ewcross, rural deanery of North Craven, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon, situated on the river Wharfe. The church of St. Wilfrid is a stone structure in the Early English and Tudor styles, consisting of chancel with two chantries, nave, aisles and square tower containing 6 bells: this church has a handsome Saxon font, and was restored in 1859. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, formerly in two medieties, yearly value £400 with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Craven and held by the Rev. Charles Henry Carlisle T.A.K.C.L. The rector of Linton receives a modus of £2 tor the tithe of corn for this parish. The Craven charity amounts to about £10 yearly, distributed in money. The Wesleyans have a place of worship here. The trustees of the late Sir Charles R. Tempest are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are William Chadwick esq. John Proctor esq. and the Earl of Craven. Burnsall Fell is 1,660 feet high. The land is used for grazing. The area of the township is 706 acres; rateable value £908 17s.; the population of the township in 1871 was 148; area of the township 10,880 acres; the population in 1871 was 659.

Grammar (Burnsall), founded in 1605 by Sir William Craven knt. Lord Mayor of London, ancestor of the Earl of Craven & a native of Appletreewick, in this parish the school is endowed with about £60 yearly from several bequests; Benjamin Brooksbank, master.
