Historical Description

BURSTWICK is a parish and scattered village, standing on an eminence, commanding a fine prospect of the surrounding country, and is half a mile north from Ryhill station on the Hull and Withernsea branch of the North Eastern railway, 3 miles south-east from Hedon and 9 east-by-south from Hull. The parish includes the townships of Burstwick-cum-Skeckling and Ryhill-cum-Camerton, in the Holderness division of the Riding, south division of the wapentake of Holderness, South Holderness petty sessional division, union of Patrington, county court district of Hedon, rural deanery of Hedon, archdeaconry of East Riding and diocese of York. The church of All Saints is a spacious building of stone and rubble, in the Gothic style of the early part of the 14th century, and consists of chancel, nave, with chapel on south side, aisle, modern brick south porch, entirely covered with ivy, and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells, the gift in 1907 of the late Samuel Hutchinson esq. of Daisy Hill, Lelley, as a memorial to his wife and their only son: in the chancel are a plain sedile, the remains of et piscina and an aumbry: the south chapel has a Decorated piscina and sedilia, and on the south side of the chancel arch is a squint: the centre light of the east window is a memorial to the Rev. William Clark, vicar here 1811-52; two lights on either side of this were presented in commemoration of the 25th year of the incumbency of the Rev. Frank Bowes King M.A. vicar 1852-90: in 1893 a marble tablet was placed in the chancel to the memory of the Rev. John Maynard, vicar 1891-3: in 1901 a silver communion set was presented by Miss Mary Leonard in memory of John Leonard, her father, for fifty years churchwarden, and in 1902 an oak reredos and panelling were erected as a memorial to the Rev. William Lucas M.A. vicar 1893-1901: the church was restored in 1893 at a cost of about £1,000; during the progress of the work a painting on wood of the execution of Charles I. was discovered, and is now preserved in the church: there are about 200 sittings. In 1901 an addition was made to the churchyard of one rood, which has been drained and enclosed with a brick wall at a cost of £180, and was subsequently consecrated by the Bishop of Hull. The register, including Skeckling, dates from 1747. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £200, including 110 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1911 by the Rev. John Arthur Colbeck, of St. Augustine’s College, Canterbury, and Durham University. In 1902 a vicarage house was erected at a cost of £1,400. The Church Institute, built at a cost of nearly £600, was opened 27 Dec. 1905. The interest on a sum of £500, left by the Rev. W. Clark, a former vicar, for educational purposes, is distributed in prizes in accordance with the scheme of the Charity Commissioners. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. Major Walter George Raleigh Chichester-Constable D.L., J.P. of Burton Constable Hall, Hull, who is lord of the manor, Mr. Jackson Marshall, Mrs. Davis, of Hull, Mr. Robert John Hosdell and Mrs. Farmer-Atkinson are the chief landowners. The soil and subsoil are clay, sand and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, beans, clover, oats and turnips. Market gardening as an industry was begun in 1907 and is steadily increasing. The area of Burstwick-cum-Skeckling township is 4,335 acres of land and 3 of water; rateable value, £6,152; the population in 1911 was 429 in the township and 674 in the parish.

There is a School Council of 6 members for Burstwick-cum-Skeckling; correspondent, Grice Fisher.

Council School (mixed), is a building of red brick, opened in 1875, for 111 children; average attendance, 60.
