Historical Description

Burton Agnes, the seat of the late Sir Griffith Boynton. Burton Agnes belonged to the Somervilles, and by an heiress of that family descended to the Griffiths; and Sir Henry Griffiths, at the latter end of the reign of Queen Elizabeth, began a stately brick house, which was finished by his widow. Here is a remarkably neat church, which was repaired in 1727, by Sir Griffith Boynton, the third baronet of his family. It contains several ancient monuments of his ancestors the Somervilles and Griffiths, and a very elegant one by Cheere, in memory of Sir Griffith, the father of the late Sir Griffith Boynton, who died 18th October, 1761. This lordship has a common of some thousand acres of land, extending to the lordship of Barnston, where stood formerly another good seat of the Boyntons, to whom it came by marriage, in the time of Richard III. The name of the Boyntons is local from Boynton, (anciently Bovington), a small village of the Wolds, five miles from Kilham, of which Bartholomew de Boynton was seized in 1060.

In the church-yard of Rudston before-mentioned, north-east of Kilham, there is a very tall obelisk of the same stone, shape, and size as those at Borough-bridge, though it is at least forty miles distant from any quarry whatever.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BURTON AGNES is a parish, township and village, with a station on the Scarborough and Hull section of the North Eastern railway, and is 5 ¾ miles south-west from Bridlington and 6 ¼ north-east from Driffield, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Dickering, union and county court district of Bridlington, rural deanery of Bridlington, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Martin is an ancient building of stone in the Norman and Early English styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower Containing 4 bells: the chancel, rebuilt in 1844, has a number of carved oak stalls on each side: in the north aisle is a chapel filled with monuments to the Somerville, Griffith and Boynton families, one of which commemorates Sir Roger Somerville, the founder of the church, ob. Feb. 1336, and another Sir Philip Somerville, ob. 1354: on an altar tomb of alabaster lie the effigies of Sir Walter Griffith, ob. 1481 and Joan (Nevill), bis; first wife; the knight is in plate armour and both wear collars of SS.: on either side are smaller figures of a son and daughter: the sides of the tomb are adorned with figures, and at one end are quartered shields of arms: against the west wall is a monument to Sir Henry Griffith, who built the hall, and died in 1620 and his wife, Elizabeth (Throckmorton): here also is an altar tomb to Sir Henry Griffith bart. ob. 1654, and his two wives, Mary (Willoughby) and Dorothy (Bellingham): on the north wall of the chancel are tablets to Sir Griffith Boynton, 5th bart. who died 22 Oct. 1761, and Sir Griffith Boynton, 6th bart. who died of fever in London, 6 Jan. 1778; and there are others to Thomas Dade, vicar, d. 1759; Ann, wife of William Cayley, vicar of Burton Agnes, d. 1769 and George Burghope, vicar of Burton Agnes, d. 1727: the stained east window was presented in 1844 by the late Rev. Robert Isaac Wilberforce, sometime archdeacon of the East Riding and vicar of the parish (1840-54); there are also two stained lancet windows in the chancel, and the west window exhibits the arms of families connected with the Boyntons: in the north aisle chapel is a raised pew belonging to this family, reached by two steps and containing a fire-place: the Norman font, formerly standing in the vicarage garden, was restored and replaced in the church by Archdeacon Wilberforce: the church was beautified about 1730 by Sir Griffith Boynton, and restored, and the chancel rebuilt about 1840-54: there are now 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1700. The living is a rectory with the chapelry of Harpham annexed, joint net yearly value £680, including 203 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Sir Edw. Feetham Coates bart. M.P., J.P. of Helperby Hall, York, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Charles Hutton Coates M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, and rural dean of Bridlington. The Wesleyan chapel here was built in 1837. In 1907 a reading room was given to the parish by Mrs. and Thomas Lamplagh Wickham-Boynton esq. J.P. in memory of the late Sir Henry Boynton, 11th baronet (d. 1899). Here are four almshouses for four poor widows, founded in 1709 by the late Sir Francis Boynton. Burton Agnes Hall, the seat of Mrs. Wickham-Boynton, stands on an eminence fading the south, and is a mansion of brick with stone dressings, in the Elizabethan style; the principal entrance is flanked by turrets and baa the royal arms of Queen Elizabeth over the doorway: the wings have octagonal bays, with strong mullioned windows, and in the centre are two square bays: the saloon is covered with curious scriptural carvings in wood and alabaster. The gateway was built in 1610, and over the arch are the arms of King James I. Mrs. Wickham-Boynton is lady of the manor and owner of the whole of the land. The soil is loam; subsoil, clay, gravel and chalk. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area of the township is 2,554 acres; rateable value, £3,674; the population in 1911 was 340, and 828 in the parish.

Public Elementary School (mixed), erected in 1871 & partly endowed by the Rev. R. Green, a former vicar, for 118 children; average attendance, 56.
