Historical Description

BURTON-IN-LONSDALE is a township, district chapelry and village in the parish of Thornton-in-Lonsdale, 243 miles from London, 15 north-east from Lancaster, 6 south-east from Kirkby Lonsdale, 2 ½ north from Bentham station and 13 north-west from settle, in the Northern division of the Riding:, petty sessional division of Ewcross, west division of the Staincliffe and Ewcross wapentake, Settle union, county court district of Kirkby Lonsdale, rural deanery of Clapham, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon, situated on the banks of the Greta and on the Lancaster and Richmond turnpike road. The church of All saints, built and endowed at the sole expense of the late Thomas Thornton esq. a native of this township, and consecrated on the 21st of April, 1870, is a handsome edifice in the Early English style and consists of chancel, nave and north aisle with a tower surmounted by a lofty spire and containing 6 bells: there is a stained east window, an organ and a marble monument in memory of the founder. The register dates from 1821. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £235, in the gift of the vicar of Thornton and held by the Rev. Thomas Leach B.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. There is a chapel for Wesleyans, an institute supported by subscriptions and members’ payments, and a branch of the Yorkshire Penny Bank, open on Saturday evenings. A fair is held on the 6th November for cattle. The village has a cotton mill and several potteries; stone bottles are manufactured here and large quantities both of black and brown ware. Thomas Thornton left in 1870, £29 yearly for bread to poor and Richard Thornton, in 1867, £16 yearly for distribution. Hill House is the seat of Miss Holgate; stone Bower is the seat of Mrs. Thornton. The principal landowners are E. T. D. Foxcroft esq. Mrs. Thornton, John Tatham esq. M.D. Edward Bore esq. and Christopher Other, esq. The soil is loamy; subsoil clay and gravel. The believed to be the most powerful machine of this kind in land is used for grazing. The area is 1,555 acres; rateable value £3,269: and the population in 1861 was 597, 1871, 696.

The Endowed Schools, a pile of buildings in the Elizabethan style, originally intended for 46 boys it 46 girls, were erected here in 1853, & endowed at the sole cost of the late Richard Thornton esq. merchant of London, & a native of this place; a scheme for the management of the charity, which has an income of £350 yearly, was introduced by the Charity Commissioners, April 30th. 1869; David Triffit, master; Miss Mary Ann Fairweather, mistress: Miss Eliza slack, infants’ mistress.
