Historical Description

BURTON LEONARD is a township and parish, 2 miles north-west from Wormald Green railway station and 5 south-east from Ripon, in the Eastern division of the Riding, lower division of Claro wapentake, Knaresborough union, Ripon county court district, Knaresborough rum deanery, Richmond archdeaconry and Ripon diocese. The church of St. Leonard is a stone edifice, in the Decorated style of Gothic, from the designs of Mr. G. H. Fowler, of Durham, with a nave and chancel both having open timbered roofs: the church was consecrated in Nov. 1878, and will seat nearly 200 persons, all the seats being free: an organ has been erected. The register dates from the year 1672, and is in a very perfect state of preservation. The living; is a discharged vicarage, yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of York, and held by the Rev. Thomas Falkner M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge, formerly sub-chanter and librarian of York Minster. The Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists have chapels here. The poor’s land of 7a. 1r. 7p. produces £21 yearly. The Duke of Devonshire is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the trustees of the late James Brown esq. of Copgrove Hall. The soil is clayey; the subsoil clay. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 1,796 acres; rateable value £2,794; population (1871) 460.
