Historical Description

BURTON PIDSEA, or Burton St. Peter, is a parish, township and well-built, pleasant and picturesque village commanding extensive prospects, and is 3 ½ miles north-east from Rye Hill and Burstwick station on the Hull and Withernsea branch of the North Eastern railway, 9 north from Patrington and 10 ¼ east-by-north from Hull, in the Holderness division of the Riding, middle division of the wapentake of Holderness, Middle Holderness petty sessional division, Patrington union and county court district, in the liberty of St. Peter, York, rural deanery of Hedon, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Peter is an ancient building of stone cobble in the Later English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south chapel, vestry, south porch of brick and an embattled western tower, containing 3 bells; in 1891 the belfry was restored at a cost of £100, and the bells, 2 of which were cracked, recast and rehung: the chancel belongs to the lay impropriator, Henry Cautley esq. who in 1893 restored the roofs and erected a stained east window in memory of his mother: there are several monuments: the church was restored in 1866, and affords 350 sittings. The registers date from the year 1705. The living, formerly a discharged vicarage, is now a rectory, the ancient rectorial tithes having been restored by the dissolution of the appropriation formerly enjoyed by the Dean and Chapter of York; net yearly value £209, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of York, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Richard Martindell Lamb M.A, of Jesus College, Cambridge. The rectory house was built in 1869 under the direction of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. There is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1847, and an implement manufactory, carried on by Mr. Edward Stamford. Major W. G. Raleigh Chichester Constable D.L., J.P. of Burton Constable Hall, Hull, who is lord of the manor, Henry Strother Cautley esq. B.A., M.P. of 33 Montagu square, London W, the trustees of the late Thomas Robinson esq. Mr. Edward Baxter Harland, Sir Tatton Sykes bart. D.L. of Sledmere, Mrs. Watson, of Hedon, and Mr. Edward Stamford, are the principal landowners. The soil and subsoil are clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans, oats, barley and seeds. The acreage is 2,304; rateable value, £3,015; the population in 1911 was 326.
