Historical Description

CAMPSALL parish comprises the townships of Campsall, Norton, Sutton, Askern, Fenwick and Moss, in the Eastern division of the Riding, Doncaster union and county court district, upper division of Osgoldcross wapentake, Doncaster rural deanery and York archdeaconry and diocese. The townships of Askern, Fenwick and Moss have been formed into ecclesiastical districts. The ancient village of Campsall is situated 1 ½ miles west from Askern railway station, 7 ½ miles north from Doncaster and 9 south from Pontefract. The church of St. Mary Magdalene is a very ancient stone fabric, originally of Norman architecture, of which traces still remain, particularly in the tower, which is entered by a beautiful Norman arch; the church is supposed to have been built in the first century after the Conquest, and was originally designed in the form of a cross, consisting of chancel, transepts and nave, but aisles have since been added; there were originally 5 bells but the whole were re-cast in 1879 and 3 others added, making a fine peal of 8; the cost, excepting the tenor bell (a gift from the family of the vicar), was defrayed by subscription: a new clock was fixed at the same time, striking Cambridge quarters, and a new font erected: the church library, numbering about 180 volumes, is contained in a priest’s room over the baptistery: there are two monuments to the Yarborough family, dated respectively 1682 and 1697; also to the family of Humphrey, dated 1669 and 1686, and to the Franks of more recent date. The vicarage was restored by the present vicar in 1878. The register dates from the year 1563 and is in good condition. The living is a discharged vicarage, yearly value (including glebe) £179, with residence, in the gift of George Bryan Cooke Yarborough esq. and held by the Rev. Edwin Castle L.TH. of University College, Durham. There is a cemetery of about an acre. The Primitive Methodists have a chapel here. Not far from here is Barnsdale, “Merrie Barnsdale,” formerly the scene of the lawless deeds of Robin Hood and Little John, who jointly despoiled the Bishop of Hereford here. Camp’s Mount, the residence of George Bryan Cooke Yarborough esq. J.P. is situated on an eminence on the north side of the village, in a well-wooded park; the lawn and pleasure grounds are beautifully laid out and contain some very fine cedars. Campsall Park, the seat of F. Bacon Frank esq. M.A., D.L., J.P. is a handsome stone mansion, standing on a lawn exquisitely laid out with flowers and shrubs, partly surrounded by an ornamental lake; a well-wooded park adjoins, which has some fine specimens of beech trees and Wellingtonia Gigantea. F. B. Frank esq. who is lord of the manor, and G. B. C. Yarborough esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is limestone, and the subsoil Is principally limestone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area of the whole parish is 9,717 acres, and of the township 1,775 acres; rateable value, £2,930. The population of the parish in 1871 was 1,939, and of the township 327.
