Historical Description

CANTLEY is a parish and village, 3 miles east-by-south from Doncaster, and 2 ½ miles from Rossington railway station; it includes the village of Branton and the hamlets of Bessecarr and High and Low Ellers, in the southern division of the Riding, Doncaster union and county court district, south division of the wapentake of Strafforth and Tickhill, rural deanery of Doncaster, and York archdeaconry and diocese, situated near the Great North Road and the river Torne. The church of St. Wilfrid is an old stone building in the Early English style, consisting of a chancel, nave, south aisle and tower with 3 bells, and contains some monuments to the Childers family, all of the 19th century. The register dates from the year 1538 and is in fair condition. The living is a discharged vicarage, yearly value £400, with a good, residence and about 35 acres of glebe, in the gift of J. W. Childers esq. J.P. and held by the Rev. William Eardley. A Sunday school is held at the National school-room. The poor’s land of 13a. 1r. 26p. produces £11 10s. Cantley Hall, the seat of J. Walbanke Childers esq. D.L., J.P. lord of the manor, is a plain stone mansion, situated 3 miles east-by-south from Doncaster, in a park of about 70 acres, and is surrounded by ornamental grounds tastefully laid out. The chief landowners are J. W. Childers esq. G. Jarratt esq. and William Cadman esq. of Wath. The soil is sandy; subsoil variable. The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips &c. The population in 1871 was 630, and the area is 5,590 acres; rateable value, £9,700.

Branton is 1 mile east; High Ellers, 1 ½ miles south-west, consists of two farms and labourers’ cottages; Low Ellers, 2 miles south-west, includes one farm and several cottages.

Bessecarr, 2 miles south includes three farm houses; Top Hall, 1 ½ miles south includes a few tenements.

National school (mixed), chiefly supported by J. W. Childers esq. & by the children’s pence; Isaac Lake, master.
