Historical Description
CARLETON (or Carlton) is a parish and village, pleasantly situated in a valley, near the river Aire, 2 miles south-west from Skipton, 10 north-west from Keighley, in the Northern division of the Riding, east division of the wapentake of Staincliff, Skipton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of West Craven, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. Mary, existing in 1121, and restored about 1500, was rebuilt in 1858—9 by subscription, at a cost of £3,200, the greater part of which was defrayed by the vicar and his relatives, the principal inhabitants and landowners contributing liberally: the present church is in the early English style, from the designs of F. H. Pownall esq. of London, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles and organ chamber, with sittings for 400: there are 3 bells, one of which was re-cast when the church was rebuilt: the church has several stained windows, one to Jane, wife of John Robinson esq. of Ravenshaw, and another to Thomas Edward, youngest son of John Slingsby esq.: there is also a handsome font. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £400, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Christ Church, Oxford, and held by the Rev. Thomas Edward Morris M.A. of that House. A school Board was formed here in 1871, consisting of five members. Here is a hospital, founded by Ferrand Spence esq. of the General Post Office, London, for twelve poor persons, six belonging to the parish of Carleton, and six to that of Market Bosworth. in Leicestershire, and endowed with £350 yearly, mostly derived from land; the inmates have each a room, and receive 10s. 6d. per week; a further sum of £17,000 was bequeathed to this charity by the late Miss Niven. Lothersdale is a district of Carleton for civil purposes. Ravenshaw, the residence of J. Slingsby esq. J.P. is a handsome stone building in the Mediaeval style, pleasantly situated in an estate of about 350 acres. The Duke of Devonshire is lord of the manor and landowner, and G. L. Fox esq. J. Slingsby esq. J.P. and the trustees of the late Sir Charles R. Tempest bart. are also landowners. The land is chiefly in pasture. The population in 1871 was 1,059, and the area is 5,258 acres, including Lothersdale and the unenclosed moors; rateable value£7,351 11s. with Lothersdale.

A school, founded in 1709, & endowed with 99 acres of land, now producing £145 yearly, for a limited number of poor boys, was by order of the Court of Chancery, dated 1856, made available for all boys & girls resident in the parish: handsome school buildings have been erected at a cost of about £2,000. The old tithe barn was converted into an additional school-room for infants, at the expense of the late vicar, the Rev. W. E. Jelf B.D.
