Historical Description

Catterick is a place of great antiquity, and either the site or very nearly so of a Roman station. Mr. Gough says the Roman town was in the fields of Thornborough House, about half a mile from Catterick-bridge, and on the south side of the river. A great many coins and other Roman remains have been, discovered here.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

CATTERICK is a township and extensive parish and village, pleasantly situated on the Southern banks of the river Swale, over which there is here a stone bridge of 4 arches, with a station on the Richmond branch of the North Eastern railway, and is 4 miles east-south-east from Richmond, 7 north from Bedale and 21 north-northwest from Boroughbridge and Ripon, in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Hang East, union and county court district of Richmond, rural deanery of West Richmond, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon; it is also situated upon the great Roman road called Leeming Lane, and was once one of the chief cities of the Northumbrian sub-kingdom of Deira. It is referred to in Antonine’s Itinerary under the Latinised form “Cataracten.” In Anglian times it was a Royal Vill, and there are extensive remains at Castle Hills on the banks of the Swale of what was at first probably the house of the Romano-British governor, and later on a residence of the Northumbrian kings. Two of these (Ethelwald in 762, and Ethelred in 752) were married here. It was partially destroyed by lire in 769 by Earnred, an Anglian rebel, but was afterwards rebuilt, and appears to have maintained its position as one of the principal towns in the north of England until the Conqueror. There are several chapelries in the parish. The parish church of St. Anne, rebuilt in 1412, is an edifice of stone, in mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 8 bells: there are some ancient brasses to the De Burgh family, and a black marble font, with the armorial bearings of the D’Arcys, De Burgh, Fitzhugh, Scroop, Lascelles and Neville families: the church was restored in 1872, and re-pewed in 1852 at a cost of about £420; in 1887 the organ was enlarged and in 1892 the chancel floor was laid with mosaic as a memorial to Mrs. Harrison by members of her family: there are 430 sittings. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value 340, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Ripon; and held since 1903 by the Rev. William Kerr-Smith M.A. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and surrogate. There is a Wesleyan chapel here. A cemetery of 1 acre was formed in 1903, at a cost of £500, and is under the control of the Parish Council. The Booth Memorial Hall, erected in 1899, in memory of the late W. C. Booth esq. is used for public entertainments. Races are held here yearly, on two days during Easter week. Sir Henry Joseph Lawson bart. of Brough Hall, who is lord of the manor, the Duke of Leeds, Marcia Baroness Conyers and Fauconberg (Countess of Yarborough) and John J. Moubray esq. of Killerby Hall, are the principal landowners. The soil of the parish of Catterick is principally gravel upon limestone, and is remarkably good and fertile, producing abundant crops of oats, barley, turnips and clover. The township of Catterick contains 1,698 acres of land and 34 of water; rateable value, £3,530; the population in 1911 was 534, and of the ecclesiastical parish 951.

Public Elementary (Endowed) school (mixed), founded & endowed in 1658 by the Rev. M. Syddall, vicar of this parish, to which is attached an hospital for sis poor widows belonging to the parish: the widows have each 9 a year; the school will hold 176 children; average attendance, 100.
