Historical Description

CATWICK is a parish, township and small village, 4 miles east from Sigglesthorne station on the Hull and Hornsea branch of the North Eastern railway, 8 north-east from Beverley, 13 north-north-east from Hull, 12 east-south-east from Driffield and 5 west-by-south from Hornsea, in the Holderness division of the Riding, Northern division of Holderness wapentake. North Holderness petty sessional division, Skirlaugh union, county Court district of Beverley, rural deanery of Hornsea, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Michael is a small building in the Gothic style, rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1863; it consists of chancel, nave, transepts, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 2 bells of pre-Reformation date, one being a Jesus bell: each transept contains a stained window to members of the Park family, and in 1893 a memorial window was erected in the chancel to George Park, who died in 1892: prior to the restoration there were traces of Norman work, which unfortunately have been destroyed or removed: the chancel stalls and prayer desk are of carved oak and there is a stone pulpit: in the north wall of the chancel is a small figure of stone, representing St. Michael. In 1896 the chancel floor was tiled, a carved oak reredos erected, and the church generally restored: there are 188 sittings. The registers date from the year 1587, and are complete with the exception of a few years and fairly legible from that year to the present time. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £145, including 60 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Major F. O. Strickland-Constable J.P. and held since 1894 by the Rev. William Smith, of St. Bees. There is a small Wesleyan chapel with 35 sittings, and a Primitive Methodist chapel erected in 1839 and seating 40 persons. The charities for distribution amongst the poor of the parish at Christmas include the interest on £50, left by the Rev. James Young, and £2 12s. 6d. annually, left by Mrs. Young, his wife; also the interest on £5, left by George Gibson; the interest on £20 10s. left by a person unknown, and the interest on £20, left by Mrs. Hannah Smith. William Bethell esq. of Rise Park, is lord of the manor. The soils, are clayey and gravelly, resting upon clay chiefly. The chief crops are wheat, barley, seeds, oats, turnips, mangolds and beans. The area is 1,570 acres; rateable value, £1,921; the population in 1911 was 213.
