Historical Description

About five miles from Selby is Cawood.

The Archbishop Wulstan obtained Cawood for the see of York, from Athelstan, in the tenth century. Archbishop Neville, in the reign of Richard II. laid out much upon it. In the time of Henry IV. Archbishop Bennet built the hall, and his successor Kemp the gatehouse, now standing. The castle was demolished during the Civil War. The vaults and foundations were dug up about forty years since.

The market at Cawood is on Wednesday. The famous Cardinal Wolsey resided at his palace at Cawood, a whole summer, and part of the winter, when he was arrested on a charge of high treason by the Earl of Northumberland, who had orders to conduct him to London; but the death of the cardinal at Leicester, terminated the business.

Of this once magnificent palace of the Archbishops of York, nothing is now left but the ruins of the great gateway, before noticed, and some other fragments, which the corroding tooth of time will probably soon annihilate.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

CAWOOD is a small ancient town and parish and a polling place for the Eastern division of the Riding, 5 miles north-west from Selby railway station, 10 south from York, 7 south-east from Tadcaster and 186 from London, in the lower division of the wapentake of Barkstone Ash, Selby union and county court district, in the liberty of Cawood, Wistow and Otley, which still retains its privileges, rural deanery of Selby and archdeaconry and diocese of York. The town is pleasantly situated on the bank of the navigable river Ouse, over which there is a handsome iron bridge, constructed in 1871, at a cost of £10,000, to connect the East and West Ridings. The town is lighted with gas during winter months. An Act of Parliament has been recently obtained for a railway from Church Fenton to Wistow, through Cawood. The Bishop Dyke extends from Sherburn to the Ouse at Cawood. The church of All saints is an ancient structure in the Norman Perpendicular and Early English styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and tower with 3 bells, two of which are dated 1674, the largest, taken from the Castle chapel, bears the invocation “sancte Andrea, ora pro nobis,” but is undated; there is a monument with two brass inscriptions to George Mountaigne, Archbishop of York (1628): an organ was given in March, 1872, by the late John Wormald esq. of Selby. The register dates from the year 1591. The living is a vicarage, yearly value about £300 with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York and held by the Rev. Alfred Bloxsome Day M.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford. There are chapels for Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists. A cemetery is now being formed by the Selby Rural sanitary authorities, of one and a half acres in extent, at a probable cost of £2,000, with two mortuary chapels. A fair is held on the 12th May annually, for cattle, sheep and horses. Bricks and tiles and pottery are made here. Cawood Castle was destroyed during the Civil Wars; the gateway and some fragments of the outer walls are all that now remain of this once stupendous edifice. The Rev. William James, of Bustwick, Holderness, built an hospital in 1723, for four poor people and endowed it with £84 yearly; James Waterhouse smith esq. built six almshouses in 1839 and endowed them with £30 a year. Mr. Elston, of Camden town, London, purchased, July 29, 1843, £200 New £3 10s., per Cent. Annuities in the name of himself and three other trustees, and, by deed enrolled in the Court of Chancery, he directed that the trustees should receive the dividends and pay the same to the minister and churchwardens, to be expended in bread, to be distributed after morning service for twenty consecutive Sundays, from the first Sunday after the 9th October. The Feoffment estate of 134 acres produces nearly £300 yearly, which is divided under a recent scheme into six parts, three of which are devoted to the maintenance of the National school, and the remaining three parts expended in apprentice fees, fuel and clothing, and public uses. There are also small charities to the amount of £12 and upwards yearly value. William Beckett Denison esq. of Nun Appleton, the Rev. Thomas sheepshanks, Hewley Mortimer-Baines esq. of Bell Hall, Naburn; Edwin Gray esq. of York, with others resident in Cawood, are the trustees of the Feoffment estate. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor, William Henry Nicholson esq. and the Prest family, being the chief landowners. The soil is light and loamy; subsoil sandy. The chief crops are wheat, potatoes and flax. The area is 2,681 acres; rateable value £5,416 9s. 5d.; population (1871) 1,179.

Schools

Feoffees' (boys), John Shaw, master; (girls & infants), Miss Rachel Hobbs, mistress; Miss Elizabeth Aris, assistant mistress.

Duffield’s school for girls, is endowed with £80 yearly & a house, the income being derived from a farm left for this purpose by the Rev. Samuel Duffield; Mrs. Mary Emmett, mistress.
