Historical Description

CAWTHORNE is a parish and village, very pleasantly situated on the brow of a bill, on the Barnsley and Huddersfield road, 4 miles west-north-west from Barnsley, 14 southeast from Huddersfield, 10 south from Wakefield, 2 ½ southwest from Darton station and 2 ½ north from Silkstone station, in the southern division of the Riding, petty sessional division of Barnsley, upper division of Staincross wapentake, union of Penistone, Barnsley county court district, rural deanery of Silkstone, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon. All saints’ church is an ancient stone structure in the Later English style, consisting of chancely nave, aisles and square embattled tower containing 6 bells; it has been enlarged at the east end and thoroughly restored by G. F. Bodley esq. of London, at the expense of Walter Thomas William Spencer-Stanhopa esq. J.P.: a magnificent tracery window has been placed in the edifice to the memory of Mrs. W. S. Stanhope, who took great interest in the progress of the work connected with the restoration; beneath the window is a brass tablet, surmounted by the family coat of arms and containing an appropriate inscription. The register dates from the year 1653 and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £178 with residence, in the gift of Walter Thomas William spencer-stanhope, and held by the Rev. Charles Tiplady Pratt M.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford. The Wesleyans, Primitive Methodists and Reformed Methodists have each a chapel here. There is also a public reading room. The Barnsley Canal basin is in this parish, from which there is a railroad to the celebrated collieries in this and the adjoining parish of Silkstone; in the township are two tan yards. Cannon Hall, about a mile west of the village, the residence of Walter Thomas William Spencer-Stanhope esq. J.P. is situated in a valley with large pleasure grounds, through which flows a rivulet, with picturesque cascades. Brook House is the residence of Abel Hold, the celebrated painter of dead game. W. B. Beaumont esq. M.P. lord of the manor, W. Thomas Wm. Spencer-Stanhope esq. and the trustees of Alex. Wm. Bosvilie (a minor), are the chief landowners. The soil is loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 3,708 acres, exclusive of plantations; rateable value £6,589 17s. 10d.; the population in 1861 was 1,283 and in 1871; 1,234.
