Historical Description

CAYTON is a chapelry, parish and village, with a station on the Hull and Scarborough branch of the North Eastern railway, 4 miles south-east from Scarborough and 1 mile from the coast, in the Whitby division of the Riding, wapentake of Pickering Lythe, petty sessional division of Pickering Lythe East, union and county court district of Scarborough, rural deanery of Scarborough, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. John is a building of stone in the Norman, Early English and later styles, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower with boldly projecting angle buttresses and small crocketed pinnacles, and containing three bells: the chancel retains a piscina and there is another in the north aisle: the font is a plain octagon; the carved oak reredos, pulpit and lectern were the gift of the late Sir Lionel M. S. Pilkington bart. (d. 1901); the organ, lamps and bells were provided by James Cooper esq. of Killerby Hall, in 1892; in the church in an inscribed slab, with arms, to John Wyvill, 1705, and another, also with arms, to Susanna, daughter of John Beilby, 1715: the Norman south doorway is of three orders, each division of the arch being completely covered with zigzag moulding; there are two shafts on either side, with cushioned caps: the church affords 140 sittings. The register dates from the year 1588. The living is a chapelry, united to the vicarage of Seamer (joint net yearly value, £348, including 143 acres of glebe) in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1885 by the Rev. Frederick George Stapleton B.A. of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, who resides at Seamer, The impropriate tithe of Cayton amounts to £329. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. The Scarborough Water Company has works here. Sir Edward Donner bart. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the Earl of Londesborough K.C.V.O. John W. Woodall esq. and James Cooper esq. The soil is various; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and some pasture land. The area is 3,509 acres of land, 5 of inland water and 95 of foreshore; rateable value, £5,896; the population in 1911 was 601.
