Historical Description
CHAPELTOWN is a village and ecclesiastical parish formed in 1844 from the parish of Ecclesfield, including the small hamlets of Burncross, Mortomley, High Green, Potter Hill, The Warren, Charlton Brook and Greek head and Lane End, in the southern division of the Riding, wapentake of Strafforth and Tickhill, Wortley union, Barnsley county court district, Ecclesfield rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of York, 2 miles north from Ecclesfield, 6 by the high road and 8 by rail north from Sheffield, 10 south from Barnsley and 5 west from Masbro’, and has a station on a branch of the south Yorkshire railway from Sheffield to Barnsley. The church of St. John, erected by subscription in 1860, is a stone building in the Pointed style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle and a lofty spire: the organ, valued at £1,000, was given by R. E. C. Chambers esq. The register dates from the year 1844. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300 with residence, in the alternate gift of the Crown and Archbishop of York and held by the Rev. William Micklethwait, of St. Aidans College, Birkenhead. St. Saviour's chapel at Mortomley, dependent on St. John’s, Chapeltown, was built by the surviving parents, brother and friends of Parkin Jetfcock, mining engineer, who lost his life December 13th. 1866, while engaged with an exploring party in the Oaks colliery, near Barnsley, after the great explosion there on the previous day; a stained window at the eastern end of the chapel being also erected to his memory; the western window, also stained, is in memory of Mrs. Catherine Jeffcock, mother of the above, and since deceased: the organ was removed hither from Chapeltown church: the cost of the building was nearly £3,000. The Methodist New Connexion have a chapel at Potter’s Hill. The Wesleyan chapel at Mount Pleasant, built on the site of the former chapel, and near the Workmen’s Hall, is a cruciform structure in French First Pointed Gothic, with apsidal terminations and a tower 80 feet high, seating 650 persons; the cost of the building was £4,500, besides £500 for the organ, the families of Newton and Chambers being large contributors. There are other Wesleyan chapels at Mortomley and High Green. The Wesleyan chapel at Warren has accommodation for about 300. Connected with these places of worship are Sunday schools, containing, in the aggregate, upwards of 800 scholars and about 150 teachers: Revs. Samuel Wray and George Sanderson, ministers. This is a coal district, and bricks and tiles are made here. The Thorncliffe and Chapeltown ironworks and collieries, belonging to Messrs. Newton, Chambers & Co. are situated in the parishes of Tankersley and Ecclesfield, and employ about 2,000 workmen and boys. There are also two hospitals for twelve poor persons, endowed with about £130 yearly. The Duke of Norfolk is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is clay and loam; subsoil, chiefly rock. The area is 1,600 acres; the population in 1871 was 4,437.
