Historical Description

CHERBY BURTON is a township, parish and village, having a station on the Beverley and Market Weighton section of the North Eastern railway, 3 miles north-west from Beverley, H the Holdemess division of the Riding, Hensley Beacon division of the wapentake of Harthill, North Hunsley Beacon petty sessional division, Beverley union and county court district of Beverley, rural deanery of Beverley, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Michael, rebuilt in 1853-53, is a building of stone in the Early Decorated style, and consists of chancel, neve, north aisle, north porch and an embattled western tower, containing a clock and 3 bells: there are several stained windows, including one presented by the late Gen. Sir Fowler Burton K.C.B. as a memorial to his son, Capt. Cecil Fowler Burton, late 7th Royal Fusiliers, and another, erected by the children of this parish in commemoration of the 61st year of the reign of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria: there are several other memorial windows: there is also a brass to Capt. C. F. Burton, erected by his brother officers: the chancel retains a piscina: in 1891 the chancel floor was relaid with marble, new oak choir stalls with carved heads erected, and the interior partly renovated at a total cost of £400: the pulpit is of carved stone, and there is a brass eagle lectern, presented by the late David Burton esq. in memory of his wife, who died 5 April, 1888. About 1901 the vestry was enlarged, and a new organ, costing £305, provided: the church affords 300 sittings. The oldest register dates from 1561. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £587, including 26 acres of glebe, with residence, built in 1877, in the gift of David Fowler Burton esq. and held since 1889 by the Rev. Bramwell Charles Barton M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1824, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1851. The charities are as follows:-Hodgson Johnson, by will dated May 5th, 1722, left 10s. yearly to be given in coal to four poor persons; Elizabeth Johnson, of Beverley, by will dated Sept. 11th, 1740, the interest on £40, to be given at Christmas to the four poorest inhabitants; and David Burton esq. in 1890 left £30 for the poor, the interest of which is given to three poor people each year. Here is a branch of the Yorkshire Penny Bank (with a subscribed capital of over £1,000); the business of the bank is transacted in the reading room every Monday evening, from 7 to 8 p.m. The Reading Room was originally founded in 1890 by the late David Burton esq. and the rector in a small cottage; the present reading room, built and provided by D. F. Burton esq. J.P. was opened by Mrs. Burton in 11894, and has a library of over 400 volumes. Cherry Burton Hall, the seat of David Fowler Burton esq. J.P. is a fine modern mansion with extentive grounds, beautifully laid out, adjoining which is a splendid cricket ground of about 4 acres, which is used by the Cherry Burton Cricket Club. Cherry Barton House is the property and residence of Mildred A., Lady Boynton. D. F. Burton esq. who is lord of the manor of the Beverley Chapter, and Lord Hotham are the chief landowners. The soil is clayey, rich and productive; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, turnips, beans and seeds. The area is 3,468 acres of land and 1 of water; rateable value, £5,053; the population in 1911 was 366.
