Historical Description

CLAPHAM is a parish and township, haring a station on the Midland railway, 6 miles north-west from settle, 11 east from Kirkby Lonsdale and 20 north-east from Lancaster, and is a polling place for the Northern division of the Riding, in the petty sessional division of Ewcross, western division of the wapentake of Staincliffe and Ewcross, settle union and county court district, Clapham rural deanery, archdeaconry of Richmond, and diocese of Ripon. The Clapham beck passes through. The church of St. James is a modern stone building, erected in 1814, consisting of chancel, nave, low square embattled tower, containing 3 bells, dated respectively 1594, 1662, and 1720, and a clock. The register dates from the year 1595, and is in fair condition. The living is a discharged vicarage, yearly value, £410, with a lectureship annexed, a residence and 20 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Ripon, and held by the Rev. John Meire Ward M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, and rural dean. The charities amount to £26 yearly. Fairs are held on the 27th of September and 2nd of October yearly, for cattle and sheep. The Ingleborough Cave, a natural formation, measures 700 yards, and contains stalactites and stalagmites, subterranean waterfalls, and vast halls, with arched roofs. Ingleborough Hill is 2,373 feet high. Ingleborough Hall is the seat of the Rev, Matthew Thomas Farrer, lord of the manor and chief landowner, and is a fine stone building, with arcaded portico of the Corinthian order, and stands in a wooded park of about 40 acres. The soil is shallow; the subsoil is limestone, clay and sandstone. The land is in pasture. The population of the township in 1871, 695; area of the township, 12,037 acres; area of the parish, 25,299; the population in 1871 was 1,421; rateable value, with Newby, £6,958.
